On Finite Presentability of Direct Products of Semigroups

A finite semigroup S is said to preserve finite generation (resp., presentability) in direct products, provided that, for every infinite semigroup T, the direct product S × T is finitely generated (resp., finitely presented) if and only if T is finitely generated (resp., finitely presented). The main result of this paper is a constructive necessary and sufficient condition for S to preserve both finite generation and presentability in direct products. The condition is that certain graphs, (s), one for each s S, are all connected. The Asymptotics of the Heat Semigroup for a General Bounded Domain with Mixed Boundary Conditions

Abstract Small-time asymptotics of the trace of the heat semigroup where {μ _ν } are the eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian in the (x ¹, x ²)-plane, is studied for a general bunded domain Ω with a smooth boundary ∂Ω, where a finite number of Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions, on the piecewise smooth parts Γ _i (i = 1, ..., n) of ∂Ω such that , are considered. Some geometrical properties associated with Ω are determined.     

A Unified Approach to Poisson Reduction

Given any Poisson action G×PP of a Poisson–Lie group G we construct an object =T ^*G*T^* P which has both a Lie groupoid structure and a Lie algebroid structure and which is a half-integrated form of the matched pair of Lie algebroids which J.-H. Lu associated to a Poisson action in her development of Drinfeld's classification of Poisson homogeneous spaces. We use to give a general reduction procedure for Poisson group actions, which applies in cases where a moment map in the usual sense does not exist. The same method may be applied to actions of symplectic groupoids and, most generally, to actions of Poisson groupoids.     

P-congruence-free Epigroups

Let P denote the equivalence relation on an epigroup in which any of its classes consists precisely of those elements owning the same pseudo-inverse. The purpose of the paper is to characterize epigroups on which any congruence either contains P or its join with P is the identity relation on epigroups. As a special subclass of epigroups, completely 0-simple semigroups having the same property are also described.     

AN ITERATIVE METHOD FOR SPLIT VARIATIONAL INCLUSION PROBLEM AND FIXED POINT PROBLEM FOR A FAMILY OF GENERALIZED ASYMPTOTICALLY NONEXPANSIVE SEMIGROUP

In this paper, strong convergence of an iterative sequence is proved, which computes an approximate solution of the set of solutions of split variational inclusion problem, the set of fixed points of a nonexpansive mapping and the set of common fixed points of a family of generalized asymptotically nonexpansive semigroup. Results obtained in this paper extend and unify the previously known results in the previous literatures.     

Stability of the tumbled state in shear flow of a nematic liquid crystal

In shear flow of a nematic liquid crystal with ₃ 0 flow alignment cannot occur. The stability of the stationary in-plane solution, the tumbled state, is investigated using abstract techniques. Employing the existence of an elastic energy a sufficient criterion for stability is formulated. This criterion depends on the in-plane solution which is obtainable as a quadrature that is non-elementary except in special cases. It is shown that the tumbled state is stable and asymptotically stable for some physical configurations. The criterion presented is not a necessary condition for stability and thus only gives a lower bound.     

Varieties of restriction semigroups and varieties of categories

The variety of restriction semigroups may be most simply described as that generated from inverse semigroups (S, ·, ^?1) by forgetting the inverse operation and retaining the two operations x⁺ = xx^?1 and x* = x^?1x. The subvariety B of strict restriction semigroups is that generated by the Brandt semigroups. At the top of its lattice of subvarieties are the two intervals [B₂, B₂M = B] and [B₀, B₀M]. Here, B₂ and B₀ are, respectively, generated by the five-element Brandt semigroup and that obtained by removing one of its nonidempotents. The other two varieties are their joins with the variety of all monoids. It is shown here that the interval [B₂, B] is isomorphic to the lattice of varieties of categories, as introduced by Tilson in a seminal paper on this topic. Important concepts, such as the local and global varieties associated with monoids, are readily identified under this isomorphism. Two of Tilson's major theorems have natural interpretations and application to the interval [B₂, B] and, with modification, to the interval [B₀, B₀M] that lies below it. Further exploration may lead to applications in the reverse direction.
