A triangular map with homoclinic orbits and no infinite ω-limit set containing periodic points

Recently, Forti, Paganoni and Smítal constructed an example of a triangular map of the unite square, F(x,y)=(f(x),g(x,y)), possessing periodic orbits of all periods and such that no infinite ω-limit set of F contains a periodic point. In this note we show that the above quoted map F has a homoclinic orbit. As a consequence, we answer in the negative the problem presented by A.N. Sharkovsky in the eighties whether, for a triangular map of the square, existence of a homoclinic orbit implies the existence of an infinite ω-limit set containing a periodic point. It is well known that, for a continuous map of the interval, the answer is positive.

Normalization of complex-valued planar vector fields which degenerate along a real curve

Taking as a start point the recent article of Meziani [7], we present several results concerning the normalization of a class of complex vector fields in the plane which degenerate along a real curve. We mainly deal with operators with finite regularity and analyze both the local situation as well as the case of normalization near a circle. Some related questions (e.g., on semi-global solvability and on the normalization of a class of generalized Mizohata operators) are also discussed.     

Multilinear interpolation between adjoint operators

Multilinear interpolation is a powerful tool used in obtaining strong-type boundedness for a variety of operators assuming only a finite set of restricted weak-type estimates. A typical situation occurs when one knows that a multilinear operator satisfies a weak L^q estimate for a single index q (which may be less than one) and that all the adjoints of the multilinear operator are of similar nature, and thus they also satisfy the same weak L^q estimate. Under this assumption, in this note we give a general multilinear interpolation theorem which allows one to obtain strong-type boundedness for the operator (and all of its adjoints) for a large set of exponents. The key point in the applications we discuss is that the interpolation theorem can handle the case q?1. When q>1, weak L^q has a predual, and such strong-type boundedness can be easily obtained by duality and multilinear interpolation (cf. Interpolation Spaces, An Introduction, Springer, New York, 1976; Math. Ann. 319 (2001) 151; in: Function Spaces and Applications (Lund, 1986), Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Vol. 1302, Springer, Berlin, New York, 1988; J. Amer. Math. Soc. 15 (2002) 469; Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 21 (1969) 441).     

Boundary regularity, uniqueness and non-uniqueness for AH Einstein metrics on 4-manifolds

This paper studies several aspects of asymptotically hyperbolic (AH) Einstein metrics, mostly on 4-manifolds. We prove boundary regularity (at infinity) for such metrics and establish uniqueness under natural conditions on the boundary data. By examination of explicit black hole metrics, it is shown that neither uniqueness nor finiteness holds in general for AH Einstein metrics with a prescribed conformal infinity. We then describe natural conditions which are sufficient to ensure finiteness.     

Segmental and secondary dynamics in hydrogen‐bonded poly(4‐vinylphenol)/poly(methyl methacrylate) blends

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the segmental (α) and secondary (β) relaxations in hydrogen‐bonded poly(4‐vinylphenol)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVPh/PMMA) blends with PVPh concentrations of 20–80% and at temperatures from ?30 to approximately glass‐transition temperature (T_g) + 80 °C. Miscible blends were obtained by solution casting from methyl ethyl ketone solution, as confirmed by single differential scanning calorimetry T_g and single segmental relaxation process for each blend. The β relaxation of PMMA maintains similar characteristics in blends with PVPh, compared with neat PMMA. Its relaxation time and activation energy are nearly the same in all blends. Furthermore, the dielectric relaxation strength of PMMA β process in the blends is proportional to the concentration of PMMA, suggesting that blending and intermolecular hydrogen bonding do not modify the local intramolecular motion. The α process, however, represents the segmental motions of both components and becomes slower with increasing PVPh concentration because of the higher T_g. This leads to well‐defined α and β relaxations in the blends above the corresponding T_g, which cannot be reliably resolved in neat PMMA without ambiguous curve deconvolution. The PMMA β process still follows an Arrhenius temperature dependence above T_g, but with an activation energy larger than that observed below T_g because of increased relaxation amplitude. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Drift transforms and Green function estimates for discontinuous processes

In this paper, we consider Girsanov transforms of pure jump type for discontinuous Markov processes. We show that, under some quite natural conditions, the Green functions of the Girsanov transformed process are comparable to those of the original process. As an application of the general results, the drift transform of symmetric stable processes is studied in detail. In particular, we show that the relativistic α-stable process in a bounded C^1,1-smooth open set D can be obtained from symmetric α-stable process in D through a combination of a pure jump Girsanov transform and a Feynman-Kac transform. From this, we deduce that the Green functions for these two processes in D are comparable.     

An entropy-based uncertainty principle for a locally compact abelian group

We classify all functions on a locally compact, abelian group giving equality in an entropy inequality generalizing the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. In particular, for functions on a real line, we proof a conjecture of Hirschman published in 1957.
