Mathematical modelling of surface vibration with volume constraint and its analysis

A hyperbolic problem with volume constraint is investigated by means of a minimizing method called the discrete Morse flow. A weak solution is introduced in a constructive way and results of numerical computations are shown.     

Parameter-based Fisher's information of orthogonal polynomials

The Fisher information of the classical orthogonal polynomials with respect to a parameter is introduced, its interest justified and its explicit expression for the Jacobi, Laguerre, Gegenbauer and Grosjean polynomials found.     

The one- and multi-sample problem for functional data with application to projective shape analysis

In this paper tests are derived for testing neighborhood hypotheses for the one- and multi-sample problem for functional data. Our methodology is used to generalize testing in projective shape analysis, which has traditionally involving data consisting of finite number of points, to the functional case. The one-sample test is applied to the problem of scene identification, in the context of the projective shape of a planar curve.     

Haar-like expansions and boundedness of a Riesz operator on a solvable Lie group

Consider the group of affine transformations of the line. Denote by X and Y the right-invariant vector fields corresponding to the s and t directions, respectively, and let We prove that the first-order Riesz operator is of weak type (1, 1) with respect to left Haar measure. This operator is therefore also bounded on . Our results provide answers, in a particular instance, to the open question of the boundedness of Riesz operators on Lie groups of exponential growth. The main parts of the proof concern the behaviour of the kernel of the operator at infinity, and exploit cancellation. A key technique is to use expansion with respect to scales of Haar-like functions. Received March 16, 1998; in final form June 22, 1998     

Compact embeddings and proper mappings

Sufficient conditions are given to assert that a C¹-proper mapping defined on a compact embedding between Banach spaces over K has a fixed point. The proof of the result is based upon continuation methods.     

Penalization methods for reflecting stochastic differential equations with jumps

The problem of approximation of a solution to a reflecting stochastic differential equation (SDE) with jumps by a sequence of solutions to SDEs with penalization terms is considered. The approximating sequence is not relatively compact in the Skorokhod topology J ¹ and so the methods of approximation based on the J ¹-topology break down. In the paper, we prove our convergence results in the S-topology on the Skorokhod space D(R⁺,?R ^d ) introduced recently by Jakubowski. The S-topology is weaker than J ¹ but stronger than the Meyer-Zheng topology and shares many useful properties with J ¹.     

The difference between the ordinary height and the canonical height on elliptic curves

We estimate the bounds for the difference between the ordinary height and the canonical height on elliptic curves over number fields. Our result is an improvement of the recent result of Cremona, Prickett, and Siksek [J.E. Cremona, M. Prickett, S. Siksek, Height difference bounds for elliptic curves over number fields, J. Number Theory 116 (2006) 42-68]. Our bounds are usually sharper than the other known bounds.
