We study linearly ordered spaces which are Valdivia compact in their order topology. We find an internal characterization of these spaces and we present a counter-example disproving a conjecture posed earlier by the first author. The conjecture asserted that a compact line is Valdivia compact if its weight does not exceed 1, every point of uncountable character is isolated from one side and every closed first countable subspace is metrizable. It turns out that the last condition is not sufficient. On the other hand, we show that the conjecture is valid if the closure of the set of points of uncountable character is scattered. This improves an earlier result of the first author.  相似文献

It is shown that every continuous action of a solvable group on a 1-arcwise connected continuum must have a fixed point or have a 2-periodic point.  相似文献

The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture states that the rank of the Mordell-Weil group of an elliptic curve E equals the order of vanishing at the central point of the associated L-function L(s,E). Previous investigations have focused on bounding how far we must go above the central point to be assured of finding a zero, bounding the rank of a fixed curve or on bounding the average rank in a family. Mestre (1986) [Mes] showed the first zero occurs by , where NE is the conductor of E, though we expect the correct scale to study the zeros near the central point is the significantly smaller . We significantly improve on Mestre's result by averaging over a one-parameter family of elliptic curves E over Q(T). We assume GRH, Tate's conjecture if E is not a rational surface, and either the ABC or the Square-Free Sieve Conjecture if the discriminant has an irreducible polynomial factor of degree at least 4. We find non-trivial upper and lower bounds for the average number of normalized zeros in intervals on the order of (which is the expected scale). Our results may be interpreted as providing further evidence in support of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, as well as the Katz-Sarnak density conjecture from random matrix theory (as the number of zeros predicted by random matrix theory lies between our upper and lower bounds). These methods may be applied to additional families of L-functions.

This paper compares the shape of the level sets for two multivariate densities. The densities are positive and continuous, and have the same dependence structure. The density f is heavy-tailed. It decreases at the same rate-up to a positive constant-along all rays. The level sets {f>c} for c0, have a limit shape, a bounded convex set. We transform each of the coordinates to obtain a new density g with Gaussian marginals. We shall also consider densities g with Laplace, or symmetric Weibull marginal densities. It will be shown that the level sets of the new light-tailed density g also have a limit shape, a bounded star-shaped set. The boundary of this set may be written down explicitly as the solution of a simple equation depending on two positive parameters. The limit shape is of interest in the study of extremes and in risk theory, since it determines how the extreme observations in different directions relate. Although the densities f and g have the same copula-by construction-the shapes of the level sets are not related. Knowledge of the limit shape of the level sets for one density gives no information about the limit shape for the other density.  相似文献

Summary The procedurediwiex presented in this paper provides an approximate solution to Cauchy's initial value problem for general hyperbolic systems of first order. The procedurecharex can be applied to the initial value problem for a hyperbolic system of quasi-linear differential equations. This second method is a kind of method of characteristics. It produces a solution for the whole domain of determinancy. Both procedures use extrapolation to the limit. Editor's Note. In this fascile, prepublication of algorithms from the Approximations series of the Handbook for Automatic Computation is continued. Algorithms are published in ALGOL 60 reference language as approved by the IFIP. Contributions in this series should be styled after the most recently published ones  相似文献

We prove a global Birkhoff decomposition for almost split real forms of loop groups, when an underlying finite dimensional Lie group is compact. Among applications, this shows that the dressing action–by the whole subgroup of loops which extend holomorphically to the exterior disc–on the UU-hierarchy of the ZS-AKNS systems, on curved flats and on various other integrable systems, is global for compact cases. It also implies a global infinite dimensional Weierstrass-type representation for Lorentzian harmonic maps (1+11+1 wave maps) from surfaces into compact symmetric spaces. An “Iwasawa-type” decomposition of the same type of real form, with respect to a fixed point subgroup of an involution of the second kind, is also proved, and an application given.  相似文献

In 1957, N.G. de Bruijn showed that the symmetric group Sym(Ω) on an infinite set Ω contains a free subgroup on 2card(Ω) generators, and proved a more general statement, a sample consequence of which is that for any group A of cardinality card(Ω), the group Sym(Ω) contains a coproduct of 2card(Ω) copies of A, not only in the variety of all groups, but in any variety of groups to which A belongs. His key lemma is here generalized to an arbitrary variety of algebras V, and formulated as a statement about functors Set V. From this one easily obtains analogs of the results stated above with “group” and Sym(Ω) replaced by “monoid” and the monoid Self(Ω) of endomaps of Ω, by “associative K-algebra” and the K-algebra EndK (V) of endomorphisms of a K-vector-space V with basis Ω, and by “lattice” and the lattice Equiv(Ω) of equivalence relations on Ω. It is also shown, extending another result from de Bruijn's 1957 paper, that each of Sym(Ω), Self(Ω) and EndK(V) contains a coproduct of 2card(Ω) copies of itself. That paper also gave an example of a group of cardinality 2card(Ω) that was not embeddable in Sym(Ω), and R. McKenzie subsequently established a large class of such examples. Those results are shown here to be instances of a general property of the lattice of solution sets in Sym(Ω) of sets of equations with constants in Sym(Ω). Again, similar results - this time of varying strengths - are obtained for Self(Ω), EndK(V), and Equiv(Ω), and also for the monoid Rel(Ω) of binary relations on Ω.Many open questions and areas for further investigation are noted.  相似文献

We study CLP-compact spaces (every cover consisting of clopen sets has a finite subcover) and CLP-compact topological groups. In particular, we extend a theorem on CLP-compactness of products from [J. Steprāns, A. Šostak, Restricted compactness properties and their preservation under products, Topology Appl. 101 (3) (2000) 213-229] and we offer various criteria for CLP-compactness for spaces and topological groups, that work particularly well for precompact groups. This allows us to show that arbitrary products of CLP-compact pseudocompact groups are CLP-compact. For every natural n we construct:
(i)
a totally disconnected, n-dimensional, pseudocompact CLP-compact group; and
(ii)
a hereditarily disconnected, n-dimensional, totally minimal, CLP-compact group that can be chosen to be either separable metrizable or pseudocompact (a Hausdorff group G is totally minimal when all continuous surjective homomorphisms GH, with a Hausdorff group H, are open).

Results of H. Cartan about holomorphic automorphisms on bounded domains are generalized to the case of hyperbolic manifolds in the sense of Kobayashi. In this setting, we give an identity theorem together with its topological version. We show also that a sequence of automorphisms which converges uniformly on some nonempty open set, has a limit on the whole space which is an automorphism. At the end of the paper, conditions are given for the sequence of iterates of a self holomorphic map in order to be an automorphism.  相似文献
