Comparison of three methods for fractionation and enrichment of low molecular weight proteins for SELDI-TOF-MS differential analysis

In most diseases, the clinical need for serum/plasma markers has never been so crucial, not only for diagnosis, but also for the selection of the most efficient therapies, as well as exclusion of ineffective or toxic treatment. Due to the high sample complexity, prefractionation is essential for exploring the deep proteome and finding specific markers.In this study, three different sample preparation methods (i.e., highly abundant protein precipitation, restricted access materials (RAM) combined with IMAC chromatography and peptide ligand affinity beads) were investigated in order to select the best fractionation step for further differential proteomic experiments focusing on the LMW proteome (MW inferior to 40,000 Da). Indeed, the aim was not to cover the entire plasma/serum proteome, but to enrich potentially interesting tissue leakage proteins. These three methods were evaluated on their reproducibility, on the SELDI-TOF-MS peptide/protein peaks generated after fractionation and on the information supplied.The studied methods appeared to give complementary information and presented good reproducibility (below 20%). Peptide ligand affinity beads were found to provide efficient depletion of HMW proteins and peak enrichment in protein/peptide profiles.     

Constructions for rotational near resolvable block designs

A (ν, k, k?1) near resolvable block design (NRBD) is r‐rotational over a group G if it admits G as an automorphism group of order (ν?1)/r fixing exactly one point and acting semiregularly on the others. Frame expansions in separable Banach spaces

Banach frames are defined by straightforward generalization of (Hilbert space) frames. We characterize Banach frames (and Xd-frames) in separable Banach spaces, and relate them to series expansions in Banach spaces. In particular, our results show that we can not expect Banach frames to share all the nice properties of frames in Hilbert spaces.     

The wavelet dimension function is the trace function of a shift-invariant system

In this note, we observe that the dimension function associated with a wavelet system is the trace of the Gramian fibers of the shift-invariant system generated by the negative dilations of the mother wavelets. When this shift-invariant system is a tight frame, each of the Gramian fibers is an orthogonal projector, and its trace, then, coincides with its rank. This connection leads to simple proofs of several results concerning the dimension function, and the arguments extend to the bi-frame case.

The effect of etching solution composition on the response of an electrochemically etched CR-39 detector

Etching solutions of different compositions were applied at room temperature (22°C) for electrochemical etching. The background developed during electrochemical etching in a CR-39 track detector was investigated. Detectors irradiated with alphas of 5.49 MeV were measured also. It was found that the PEW solutions (potassiumhydroxid, ethylalcohol, water) showed good sensitivity. One of them (PEW_20/40 was applied for neutrons from a ²⁵²Cf source. The achieved registration sensitivity was about 10⁻⁵ spot/n after 3 hours of etching time.

Maximal proper acceleration and the structure of spacetime

A limiting proper acceleration in nature follows deductively from known physics and compels the union of spacetime and four-velocity space into a maximal-acceleration invariant phase space having an intrinsic Kaluza-Klein-type fiber-bundle structure with manifest gauge properties. The Riemann curvature scalar of the bundle manifold is determined, and a possible action principle is considered to serve as a basis for the generation of field equations.1. This is an expanded version of an invited paper presented at the Fifth Marcel Grossmann Meeting at the University of Western Australia, 8–12 August 1988.
