Summary Electrophoretic mobility measurements in the pH 2‐10 range are described for several commercial HPLC silica microparticles
and a laboratory-produced product. The content of metal impurities for the silicas was also determined by AAS. An acidic/hydrothermal
treatment was used to generate a more homogenous surface for some of the silicas. The zero points of charge (zpc) for both
a native and a treated silica plus several commercial HPLC silicas were compared. The electrophoretic mobility method may

An additive procedure (SIBFA) is developed for the rapid computation of conformational energy variations in very large molecules. The macromolecule is built out of constitutive molecular fragments and the intramolecular energy is computed as a sum of interaction energies between the fragments. The electrostatic and the polarization components are calculated using multicenter multipole expansions of theab initio SCF electron density of the fragments. The repulsion component is obtained as a sum of bond and lone pair interactions.Tests of the procedure on a series of model compounds containing ether oxygens and pyridine-like nitrogens are reported and compared with the results of correspondingab initio SCF calculations. The reaction of 3-(4-phenyl-2-pyridyl)-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine (PPDT) and tetraphenylborate (TPB) with cobalt (II) has been studied to determine the optimum conditions for the extraction and quantitative spectrophotometry determination of this metal. The ternary complex is extracted into molten naphthalene at pH 3.6–7.4. The solid naphthalene containing the cobalt associated complex is separated by filtration and dissolved in acetonitrile. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range 8–140 μg cobalt in 10 ml of acetonitrile solution. The molar absorptivity and sensitivity are 4.2×103 l·mol?1·cm?1 and 0.01408 μg/cm2, respectively. The other factors such as pH, amounts of reagents and naphthalene, shaking and standing times, and the effect of diverse ions are studied. Natural rubber is reinforced with a novel type of grass fiber (Cyperus Tegetum Rox b). The effects of fiber loading of different mesh sizes on curing characteristics and mechanical properties of grass fiber filled natural rubber composite are studied. Since 400 mesh grass fiber loaded natural rubber composite shows superior mechanical properties, therefore the effect of silane coupling agent was studied for this particular composite. Here composites were prepared by using water leached grass fiber. Optimum cure time increases with the increase in fiber loading but the change in scorch time is less. The same trend of increase in optimum cure time is observed in the presence of Si69. But the value is higher compared to that of rubber composite without Si69. With increase in the fiber loading, modulus and hardness of the composite increases but tensile strength decreases. The mechanical properties of the composite, namely moduli at 200 and 300% elongation and hardness increase in the presence of Si69 but tensile strength is less compared to that of the composite without Si69. The conformational behavior of these compounds and the orientation of their substituents are deduced from the NMR spectra, from the X-ray crystal structures of two compounds and from the ab-initio level calculations. An efficient synthesis of 6-azapregnane derivatives and their biological activity is described. The nitrogen was introduced into the B ring using Beckmann rearrangement of the (E)-oxime of 6-oxo-B-nor-5α-pregnane derivatives. The required 3α-hydroxyl was produced either by solvolysis of the corresponding 3β-mesyloxy group or by the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction of the 3-oxo group; this reduction could be carried out selectively with an unprotected 3,20-dioxo derivative. The binding of the 6-aza-steroids to the γ-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABAA) was measured using [35S]-tert-butyl-bicyclo[2.2.2]phosphorothionate (TBPS) and [3H]flunitrazepam. The structure and properties of the blend of regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were investigated.
The two polymers in the blend are in the state of phase segregation. Infrared (IR) spectra indicate that the RSF in the blend
maintains its intrinsic properties, thus, ethanol treatment can transfer silk I structure of RSF to silk II structure. The
water absorption property and mechanical property of the blend are improved in comparison with those of RSF. The blend maintains
the major merit of RSF, that is, it can immobilize glucose oxidase on the basis of the conformational transition from silk
I structure to silk II structure. The properties of the immobilized enzyme are examined. Moreover, the second generation of
glucose sensor based on the immobilized enzyme is fabricated and it has a variety of advantages including easy maintenance

This paper mainly deals with the design and synthesis of a novel styrene-butadieneblock copolymer. When this copolymer is used in the tread portion of tyres, it can improvewet skid resistance and reduce rolling resistance without sacrificing its general physical-mechanical properties.
