Let be a completely regular Hausdorff space, and let be the space of continuous real-valued functions on endowed with the compact-open topology. We find various equivalent conditions for to be a -space, resolving an old question of Jarchow and consolidating work by Jarchow, Mazon, McCoy and Todd. Included are analytic characterizations of pseudocompactness and an example that shows that, for , Grothendieck's -spaces do not coincide with Jarchow's -spaces. Any such example necessarily answers a thirty-year-old question on weak barrelledness properties for , our original motivation.

A well-known characterization of quasicircles is the following: A Jordan curve in the complex plane is a quasicircle if and only if it is the image of the unit circle under a quasisymmetric embedding. In this paper we try to characterize a subclass of quasicircles, namely, symmetric quasicircles, by introducing the concept of asymptotically symmetric embeddings. We show that a Jordan curve in the complex plane is a symmetric quasicircle if and only if it is the image of the unit circle under an asymptotically symmetric embedding.

Let Mn denote the maximum of a random sample of size n and Kn(a) be the number of near maxima, i.e. the number of sample observations in the fixed-width window (Mn – a, Mn]. There is a known integral criterion for almost sure convergence (to unity) of Kn(a), and we establish a similar criterion for complete convergence. We obtain simple but quite general sufficient conditions on the survivor function for satisfying the integral criteria. Ancel's method of fiberwise trivial relations is applied to the problem of characterization of absolute equivariant extensors. We obtain a generalization of Jaworowski's theorem on characterization of equivariant extensors lying in to the case when the space is infinite-dimensional, has infinitely many orbit types and the acting compact group is not necessarily a Lie group.
