The identity is isolated among composition operators

Let be the Banach algebra of bounded holomorphic functions on the open unit ball of a Banach space. We show that the identity operator is an isolated point in the space of composition operators on . This answers a conjecture of Aron, Galindo and Lindström.

     

Non-expansive Mappings and Iterative Methods in Uniformly Convex Banach Spaces

In this article, we will investigate the properties of iterative sequence for non-expansive mappings and present several strong and weak convergence results of successive approximations to fixed points of non-expansive mappings in uniformly convex Banach spaces. The results presented in this article generalize and improve various ones concerned with constructive techniques for the fixed points of non-expansive mappings.     

Smoothing Properties and Approximation of Time Derivatives for Parabolic Equations: Variable Time Steps

We study smoothing properties and approximation of time derivatives for time discretization schemes with variable time steps for a homogeneous parabolic problem formulated as an abstract initial value problem in a Banach space. The time stepping methods are based on using rational approximations to the exponential function which are A()-stable for suitable (0,/2] with unit bounded maximum norm. First- and second-order approximations of time derivatives based on using difference quotients are considered. Smoothing properties are derived and error estimates are established under the so-called increasing quasi-quasiuniform assumption on the time steps.     

Uniform convexity of ψ-direct sums of Banach spaces

Let X and Y be Banach spaces and ψ a continuous convex function on the unit interval [0,1] satisfying certain conditions. Let X⊕_ψY be the direct sum of X and Y equipped with the associated norm with ψ. We show that X⊕_ψY is uniformly convex if and only if X,Y are uniformly convex and ψ is strictly convex. As a corollary we obtain that the ?_p,q-direct sum (not p=q=1 nor ∞), is uniformly convex if and only if X,Y are, where ?_p,q is the Lorentz sequence space. These results extend the well-known fact for the ?_p-sum . Some other examples are also presented.     

Existence of positive solutions of nonlinear fractional differential equations

Existence of positive solutions for the nonlinear fractional differential equation D^su(x)=f(x,u(x)), 0<s<1, has been studied (S. Zhang, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 252 (2000) 804-812), where D^s denotes Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative. In the present work we study existence of positive solutions in case of the nonlinear fractional differential equation:

An approximation problem of the finite rank operator in Banach spaces

By the method of geometry of Banach spaces, we have proven that a bounded linear operator in Banach space is a compact linear one iff it can be uniformly approximated by a sequence of the finite rank bounded homogeneous operators, which reveals the essence of the counter example given by Enflo.     

A new algebraic approach to the Szegő-Widom limit theorem

We give another proof of the Szeg\H{o}–Widom Limit Theorem. This proof relies on a new Banach algebra method that can be directly applied to the asymptotic computation of the Toeplitz determinants. The Generalized Chern Character and Lefschetz Numbers in W*-Modules

We define N-theory as being an analogue of K-theory on the category of von Neumann algebras such that K ₀(A)N ₀(A) for any von Neumann algebra A. Moreover, it turns out to be possible to construct the extension of the Chern character to some homomorphism from N ₀(A) to an even Banach cyclic homology of A. Also, we define generalized Lefschetz numbers for an arbitrary unitary endomorphism U of an A-elliptic complex. We study them in the situation when U is an element of a representation of some compact Lie group.

A universal property of reflexive hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces

It is shown that every separable Banach space universal for the class of reflexive Hereditarily Indecomposable space contains isomorphically and hence it is universal for all separable spaces. This result shows the large variety of reflexive H.I. spaces.
