Rank one case of Dwork's conjecture

In this paper, we prove the rank one case of Dwork's conjecture on the -adic meromorphic continuation of the pure slope L-functions arising from the slope decomposition of an overconvergent F-crystal. Further explicit information about zeros and poles of the pure slope L-functions are also obtained, including an application to the Gouvêa-Mazur type conjecture in this setting.

     

A Quantization on Riemann Surfaces with Projective Structure

Let X be a Riemann surface equipped with a projective structure. Let be a square-root of the holomorphic cotangent bundle K _X . Consider the symplectic form on the complement of the zero section of obtained by pulling back the symplectic form on K _X using the map ². We show that this symplectic form admits a natural quantization. This quantization also gives a quantization of the complement of the zero section in K _X equipped with the natural symplectic form.     

A New Class of Unitals in the Hughes Plane

A new class of unitals in the Hughes planes is enumerated and classified. The unital obtained by L. A. Rosati is shown to be a member of this class. Their collineation groups are determined and the unitals are sorted by projective equivalence. The dual designs are described and certain members are shown to be self-dual.     

On the structure of stationary sets

We isolate several classes of stationary sets of [k]ωand investigate implications among them. Under a large cardinal assumption, we prove a structure theorem for stationary sets.     

Absolutely indecomposable modules

A module is called absolutely indecomposable if it is directly indecomposable in every generic extension of the universe. We want to show the existence of large abelian groups that are absolutely indecomposable. This will follow from a more general result about -modules over a large class of commutative rings with endomorphism ring which remains the same when passing to a generic extension of the universe. It turns out that `large' in this context has a precise meaning, namely being smaller than the first -Erdos cardinal defined below. We will first apply a result on large rigid valuated trees with a similar property established by Shelah in 1982, and will prove the existence of related `-modules' (-modules with countably many distinguished submodules) and finally pass to -modules. The passage through -modules has the great advantage that the proofs become very transparent essentially using a few `linear algebra' arguments also accessible for graduate students. The result closes a gap of Eklof and Shelah (1999) and Eklof and Mekler (2002), provides a good starting point for Fuchs and Göbel, and gives a new construction of indecomposable modules in general using a counting argument.

     

On the Weak Invariance Principle for Stationary Sequences under Projective Criteria

In this paper, we study the central limit theorem and its weak invariance principle for sums of a stationary sequence of random variables, via a martingale decomposition. Our conditions involve the conditional expectation of sums of random variables with respect to the distant past. The results contribute to the clarification of the central limit question for stationary sequences. 16-Dimensional Smooth Projective Planes with Large Collineation Groups

Smooth projective planes are projective planes defined on smooth manifolds (i.e. the set of points and the set of lines are smooth manifolds) such that the geometric operations of join and intersection are smooth. A systematic study of such planes and of their collineation groups can be found in previous works of the author. We prove in this paper that a 16-dimensional smooth projective plane which admits a collineation group of dimension d 39 is isomorphic to the octonion projective plane P₂ O. For topological compact projective planes this is true if d 41. Note that there are nonclassical topological planes with a collineation group of dimension 40.     

Geometric Algebra in Linear Algebra and Geometry

This article explores the use of geometric algebra in linear and multilinear algebra, and in affine, projective and conformal geometries. Our principal objective is to show how the rich algebraic tools of geometric algebra are fully compatible with and augment the more traditional tools of matrix algebra. The novel concept of an h-twistor makes possible a simple new proof of the striking relationship between conformal transformations in a pseudo-Euclidean space to isometries in a pseudo-Euclidean space of two higher dimensions. The utility of the h-twistor concept, which is a generalization of the idea of a Penrose twistor to a pseudo-Euclidean space of arbitrary signature, is amply demonstrated in a new treatment of the Schwarzian derivative.     

On（N,U）-Coherence of Modules and Rings

Let U be a flat right R-module and N an infinite cardinal number.A left R-module M is said to be (N,U)-coherent if every finitely generated submodule of every finitely generated M-projective module in σ[M] is (N,U)-finitely presented in σ[M].It is proved under some additional conditions that a left R-module M is (N,U)-coherent if and only if Л^Ni∈I U is M-flat as a right R-module if and only if the (N,U)-coherent dimension of M is equal to zero.We also give some characterizations of left (N,U)-coherent dimension of rings and show that the left N-coherent dimension of a ring R is the supremum of (N,U)-coherent dimensions of R for all flat right R-modules U.
