Natural Operators Lifting Vector Fields to Bundles of Weil Contact Elements

Let A be a Weil algebra. The bijection between all natural operators lifting vector fields from m-manifolds to the bundle functor K ^A of Weil contact elements and the subalgebra of fixed elements SA of the Weil algebra A is determined and the bijection between all natural affinors on K ^A and SA is deduced. Furthermore, the rigidity of the functor K ^A is proved. Requisite results about the structure of SA are obtained by a purely algebraic approach, namely the existence of nontrivial SA is discussed.     

Artinian level modules and cancellable sequences

In order to use dualization to study Hilbert functions of artinian level algebras we extend the notion of level sequences and cancellable sequences, introduced by Geramita and Lorenzini, to include Hilbert functions of certain artinian modules. As in the case of algebras a level sequence is cancellable, but now by dualization its reverse is also cancellable which gives a new condition on level sequences. We also give a characterization of the cancellable sequences involving Macaulay representations.     

A complete set of numerical invariants for a subfactor

We show that certain numerical invariants associated naturally to a subfactor planar algebra constitute a complete family in the sense of determining the isomorphism class of the subfactor planar algebra.In the course of the proof, we show also that planar algebra isomorphisms of subfactor planar algebras can always be chosen to be ∗-preserving. This latter statement generalises the fact that ‘Hopf algebra isomorphisms of finite-dimensional Kac algebras can be chosen to be ∗-preserving’.     

Computing homotopic shortest paths in the plane

We address the problem of computing homotopic shortest paths in the presence of obstacles in the plane. Problems on homotopy of paths received attention very recently [Cabello et al., in: Proc. 18th Annu. ACM Sympos. Comput. Geom., 2002, pp. 160–169; Efrat et al., in: Proc. 10th Annu. European Sympos. Algorithms, 2002, pp. 411–423]. We present two output-sensitive algorithms, for simple paths and non-simple paths. The algorithm for simple paths improves the previous algorithm [Efrat et al., in: Proc. 10th Annu. European Sympos. Algorithms, 2002, pp. 411–423]. The algorithm for non-simple paths achieves O(log²n) time per output vertex which is an improvement by a factor of O(n/log²n) of the previous algorithm [Hershberger, Snoeyink, Comput. Geom. Theory Appl. 4 (1994) 63–98], where n is the number of obstacles. The running time has an overhead O(n²⁺) for any positive constant . In the case k<n²⁺, where k is the total size of the input and output, we improve the running to O((n+k+(nk)^2/3)log^O(1)n).     

Motion Control by ZV Shaper Synthesis Extended for Fractional Systems and Its Application to CRONE Control

Shaping command input or preshaping is used for reducing system oscillation in motion control. Desired systems inputs are altered so that the system finishes the requested move without residual oscillation. This technique, developed by N.C. Singer and W.P. Seering, is used for example in the aerospace field, in particular in flexible structure control. This paper presents the study of ZV shaper for explicit fractional derivative systems (generalized derivative systems). A robustness study of ZV shaper is then presented and applied to improve second generation CRONE control response time. Results from simulation and from a DC motor bench are also given.

Classification of graded Hecke algebras for complex reflection groups

The graded Hecke algebra for a finite Weyl group is intimately related to the geometry of the Springer correspondence. A construction of Drinfeld produces an analogue of a graded Hecke algebra for any finite subgroup of GL(V). This paper classifies all the algebras obtained by applying Drinfeld's construction to complex reflection groups. By giving explicit (though nontrivial) isomorphisms, we show that the graded Hecke algebras for finite real reflection groups constructed by Lusztig are all isomorphic to algebras obtained by Drinfeld's construction. The classification shows that there exist algebras obtained from Drinfeld's construction which are not graded Hecke algebras as defined by Lusztig for real as well as complex reflection groups. A Framework for Monitoring Progress and Planning Teaching Towards the Effective Use of Computer Algebra Systems

This article suggests a framework to organise a cluster of variables that are associated with students' effective use of computer algebra systems (CAS) in mathematics learning. Based on a review of the literature and from the authors' own teaching experience, the framework identifies the main characteristics of students' interactions with CAS technology and how these may be used to monitor students' developing use of CAS; from this, the framework may be used to plan teaching in order to gain greater benefit from the availability of CAS. Four case studies describing students' development over a semester are reported. These demonstrate a variety of combinations of technical competencies and personal attributes. They indicate the importance of both the technical and personal aspects but suggest that negative attitudes rather than technical difficulties can limit the effective use of CAS. Finally practical suggestions are given for teaching strategies which may promote effective use of CAS.This revised version was published online in September 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Hochschild Cohomologies of the Algebra of Smooth Functions

Based on the previously developed technique using the Laplace transformation of distributions with compact support, we calculate the Hochschild cohomologies of the algebra of smooth functions on a finite-dimensional real vector space with coefficients in the adjoint representation.     

A Generalization of a Two-Parameter Quantization for the Group GL 2(k)

We generalize a well-known two-parameter quantization for the group GL ₂(k) (over an arbitrary field k). Specifically, a certain class of Hopf algebras is constructed containing that quantization. The algebras are constructed given an arbitrary coalgebra and an arbitrary pair of its commuting anti-isomorphisms, and are defined by quadratic relations. They are densely linked to the compact quantum groups introduced by Woronowicz. We give examples of Hopf algebras that can be rowed up to the two-parameter quantization for GL ₂(k).
