False Detection of Cyanide Ion in Photographic Processing Waste Solutions Using Standardized Reference Methods

Abstract

Although cyanide compounds are not incorporated in photographic processing solutions, false detection of cyanide ion is often encountered during the determination of total cyanide by various standardized methods such as ISO, ANSI and JIS. Various organic compounds and nitrogen compounds in the processing solutions were examined because of this false detection. The results suggest that hydrogen cyanide is formed by a reaction between these compounds during the distillation process for the separation of total cyanide, even though ISO, ANSI and JIS were used. The results support the following three mechanisms of cyanide formation involved in the process: (1) Hydroxylammonium salts reacts with another ingredient, formaldehyde, to form formaldoxime, which then decomposes to HCN. (2) Hydroxylammonium is oxidized by air to form nitrite ion, which subsequently reacts with organic compounds such as aminocarboxylic acids and aromatic amines (the colour-developing agent) to form HCN. (3) Potassium permanganate oxidizes aromatic amines to form HCN.     

Molecular signal suppression by in situ microextraction in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

The detailed characterization of complex mixtures by NMR is often hampered by the presence of signals from uninformative compounds, the resonances of which overlap with those of the molecules of interest. We provide here a proof of principle for an approach to NMR signal suppression in complex samples using Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPS). Addition of a few milligrams of polymer to a solution traps the target molecule in typical micromolar to millimolar concentration, thus achieving in situ signal suppression, without altering any other spectral features. This method minimized any manipulation or perturbation of the spectrum and was applied to a complex mixture of known compounds and to a plant extract, in both cases spiked with a compound (bisphenol A), which was subsequently removed by selective binding to a complementary MIP. What is described in this report is comparable with microextraction and may in due course be applied to a large number of analytical challenges. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Reinvestigation of the ν2 + 2ν3 subband in the overtone icosad of 12CH4 using cavity ring-down (CRD) spectroscopy of a supersonic jet expansion

We report a detailed reinvestigation of the ν₂?+?2ν₃ combination band of methane ¹²CH₄ centred at (7510.3378?±?0.003)?cm^?1 ((225.154263?±?0.0001)?THz) within the icosad of the overtone absorption. A new experimental setup is described, allowing us to carry out cw-laser cavity ring-down spectroscopy (cw-CRDS) at instrumental resolution in the MHz range in seeded supersonic jet expansions down to rotational temperature of 7?K compared to previous cw-CRDS measurements in our group achieving about 50?K in expansions of neat CH₄. We provide a careful re-analysis on the basis of our new experimental results for the Q and R branch transitions including data obtained between about 7 and 300?K under various conditions. We resolve previously observed discrepancies of assignments and are able to present a definitive assignment for lines involving angular momentum quantum numbers up to J?=?4. The analysis of relative intensities in spectra taken at rotational and effective translational temperatures between about 50?K and less than 10?K indicate conservation of nuclear spin symmetry upon supersonic jet expansion, in agreement with previous results using other techniques and covering other spectral ranges.

Reaktion von Pyridin-2-Carbonsäure Mit Tetrabutylammonium-Tetrachloro-Nitridotechnetat(VI) Sowie Tetrabutylammonium-Tetrachlorooxotechnetat (V)

Abstract

The reaction of 2-pyridine carboxylic acid (Hpic) with (n-Bu₄N)[TcNCl₄] and (n-Bu₄N)[TcOCl₄] in ethanol and methanol, respectively, yields the dinuclear μ-oxo complex [(pic)₂NTc-O-TcN(pic)(Hpic)Cl] and the monomeric complex [TcO(pic)₂Cl].

Visible and infrared spectroscopy, ESR, ¹H-NMR and ⁹⁹Tc-NMR have been used to characterize the new compounds. The most important field of application for the new compounds synthesized is radiodiagnostics.     

Modified Preparation of 99mTe-Iron Hydroxide Macroaggregate (99mTe-Fe-(OH)2MA)

A modified method for preparing ^99mTc-FHMA for pulmonary studies is elabrated. It includes a new antioxidant sodium metabisulphite. The optimum conditions for the reparation are given. A simple and rapid procedure with a yield more than 98% is described which eliminates a further purification step.
