Newton's method on Riemannian manifolds: covariant alpha theory

In this paper, Smale's theory is generalized to the contextof intrinsic Newton iteration on geodesically complete analyticRiemannian and Hermitian manifolds. Results are valid for analyticmappings from a manifold to a linear space of the same dimension,or for analytic vector fields on the manifold. The invariant is defined by means of high-order covariant derivatives. Boundson the size of the basin of quadratic convergence are given.If the ambient manifold has negative sectional curvature, thosebounds depend on the curvature. A criterion of quadratic convergencefor Newton iteration from the information available at a pointis also given.     

Small Solutions of Quadratic Diophantine Equations

We consider quadratic diophantine equations of the shape for a polynomial Q(X₁, ..., X_s) Z[X₁, ..., X_s] of degree 2.Let H be an upper bound for the absolute values of the coefficientsof Q, and assume that the homogeneous quadratic part of Q isnon-singular. We prove, for all s 3, the existence of a polynomialbound _s(H) with the following property: if equation (1) hasa solution x Z^s at all, then it has one satisfying For s = 3 and s = 4 no polynomial bounds _s(H) were previouslyknown, and for s 5 we have been able to improve existing boundsquite significantly. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification11D09, 11E20, 11H06, 11P55.     

On the solution of Falkner-Skan equations

New existence and uniqueness proofs are given for the solutions of the equations governing the self-similar compressible boundary layer (Falkner-Skan equations). The properties of the solutions are studied and some bounds on important quantities are concluded. The paper is restricted to favourable pressure gradients and to wall cooling.     

Almost automorphic solutions for abstract functional differential equations

For abstract linear functional differential equations with an almost automorphic forcing term, we establish a result on the existence of almost automorphic solutions, which extends the classical theorem due to Massera on the existence of periodic solutions for linear periodic ordinary differential equations.     

Oscillation of second order neutral delay differential equations of Emden-Fowler type

We present new oscillation criteria for the second order nonlinear neutral delay differential equation [y(t)-py(t-τ)]'+ q(t)y ^λ (g(t)) sgn y(g(t)) = 0, t ≧ t ₀. Our results solve an open problem posed by James S.W . Wong [24]. The relevance of our results becomes clear due to a carefully selected example. An Epidemic Model with a Time Delay in Transmission

We study a mathematical model which was originally suggested by Greenhalgh and Das and takes into account the delay in the recruitment of infected persons. The stability of the equilibria are also discussed. In addition, we show that the introduction of a time delay in the transmission term can destabilize the system and periodic solutions can arise by Hopf bifurcation.     

Dirac Operators on Hypersurfaces of Manifolds with Negative Scalar Curvature

We give a sharp extrinsic lower bound for the first eigenvaluesof the intrinsic Dirac operator of certain hypersurfaces boundinga compact domain in a spin manifold of negative scalar curvature.Limiting-cases are characterized by the existence, on the domain,of imaginary Killing spinors. Some geometrical applications, as anAlexandrov type theorem, are given.     

Parabolic Capacity and Soft Measures for Nonlinear Equations

We first introduce, using a functional approach, the notion of capacity related to the parabolic p-Laplace operator. Then we prove a decomposition theorem for measures (in space and time) that do not charge the sets of null capacity. We apply this result to prove existence and uniqueness of renormalized solutions for nonlinear parabolic initial boundary-value problems with such measures as right-hand side.     

On Solvability of a Boundary Value Problem for Singular Integral Equations

This paper deals with the solvability of boundary value problems for singular integral equations of the form (i)-(ii).By an algebraic method we reduce the problem (i)-(ii) to a system of linear algebraic equations which gives all solutions in a closed form.AMS Subject Classification: 47G05, 45GO5, 45E05     

Consistent Initialization for Nonlinear Index-2 Differential–Algebraic Equation: Large Sparse Systems in MATLAB

An important component of any initial-value solver for higher-index differential–algebraic equations consists in the computation of consistent initial values. In a recent paper [5], an algorithm is proposed which is applicable to a very general class of index-2 systems. Unfortunately, the computational expense is rather high. We present a modification of this approach, which gives rise to a MATLAB implementation capable of handling systems of moderate dimension (several thousands of unknowns). The algorithm is illustrated by examples.
