In this paper we study higher Chow groups of smooth, projective surfaces over a field k of characteristic zero, using some new Hodge theoretic methods which we develop for this purpose. In particular we investigate the subgroup of CH r+1 (X,r) with r = 1,2 consisting of cycles that are supported over a normal crossing divisor Z on X. In this case, the Hodge theory of the complement forms an interesting variation of mixed Hodge structures in any geometric deformation of the situation. Our main result is a structure theorem in the case where X is a very general hypersurface of degree d in projective 3-space for d sufficiently large and Z is a union of very general hypersurface sections of X. In this case we show that the subgroup of CH r+1 (X,r) we consider is generated by obvious cycles only arising from rational functions on X with poles along Z. This can be seen as a generalization of the Noether–Lefschetz theorem for r = 0. In the case r = 1 there is a similar generalization by Müller-Stach, but our result is more precise than it, since it is geometric and not only cohomological. The case r = 2 is entirely new and original in this paper. For small d, we construct some explicit examples for r = 1 and 2 where the corresponding higher Chow groups are indecomposable, i.e. not the image of certain products of lower order groups. In an appendix Alberto Collino constructs even more indecomposable examples in CH 3 (X,2) which move in a one-dimensional family on the surface X.Contribution to appendix.  相似文献

Large sets of disjoint group‐divisible designs with block size three and type 2n41 were first studied by Schellenberg and Stinson because of their connection with perfect threshold schemes. It is known that such large sets can exist only for n ≡0 (mod 3) and do exist for all odd n ≡ (mod 3) and for even n=24m, where m odd ≥ 1. In this paper, we show that such large sets exist also for n=2k(3m), where m odd≥ 1 and k≥ 5. To accomplish this, we present two quadrupling constructions and two tripling constructions for a special large set called *LS(2n). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We construct a new family of cyclic difference sets with parameters ((3 d – 1)/2, (3 d – 1 – 1)/2, (3 d – 2 – 1)/2) for each odd d. The difference sets are constructed with certain maps that form Jacobi sums. These new difference sets are similar to Maschietti's hyperoval difference sets, of the Segre type, in characteristic two. We conclude by calculating the 3-ranks of the new difference sets.  相似文献

We prove that the varieties of complete pairs of zero-dimensional subschemes of lengths d 1 2, d 2 4 on a smooth irreducible projective algebraic surface are singular.  相似文献

An affine manifold is a manifold with a flat affine structure, i.e. a torsion-free flat affine connection. We slightly generalize the result of Hirsch and Thurston that if the holonomy of a closed affine manifold is isomorphic to amenable groups amalgamated or HNN-extended along finite groups, then the Euler characteristic of the manifold is zero confirming an old conjecture of Chern. The technique is from Kim and Lee's work using the combinatorial Gauss–Bonnet theorem and taking the means of the angles by amenability. We show that if an even-dimensional manifold is obtained from a connected sum operation from K(, 1)s with amenable fundamental groups, then the manifold does not admit an affine structure generalizing a result of Smillie.  相似文献

In this note, we show that given a closed, orientable genus-g surface S g , any hyperbolic toral automorphism has a positive power which induces a quadratic, orientable pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on S g . To show this, we lift Anosov toral automorphisms through a ramified topological covering and present the lifted homeomorphism via a standard set of Lickorish twists. This construction provides a general method of producing pseudo-Anosov maps of closed surfaces with predetermined orientable foliations and quadratic dilatation. Since these lifted automorphisms have orientable foliations, this construction is a sort of converse to that of Franks and Rykken [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 1999], who established that one can associate to a quadratic pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism with oriented unstable foliation a hyperbolic toral automorphism.  相似文献

In this paper, we derive an explicit group-invariant formula for the Euler–Lagrange equations associated with an invariant variational problem. The method relies on a group-invariant version of the variational bicomplex induced by a general equivariant moving frame construction, and is of independent interest.  相似文献
