This paper gives a new proof of Kamienny's Criterion using the method of Coleman and Chabauty.

     

Asymptotically Nonexpansive Mappings in Modular Function Spaces

In this paper, we prove that if ρ is a convex, σ-finite modular function satisfying a Δ₂-type condition, C a convex, ρ-bounded, ρ-a.e. compact subset of L_ρ, and T: C → C a ρ-asymptotically nonexpansive mapping, then T has a fixed point. In particular, any asymptotically nonexpansive self-map defined on a convex subset of L¹(Ω, μ) which is compact for the topology of local convergence in measure has a fixed point.     

On the Accuracy of Upwind and Symmetric TVD Schemes in Simulating Low Mach Number Flow

The accuracy of MUSCL upwind and Yee-Roe-Davis symmetric TVD schemes for simulating low Mach number flow is studied through a numerical experiment of the 2-D lid driven cavity problem. The steady slate solution is reached by using a marching approach based on the pseudocompressibilty method in conjunction with implicit approximate factorization. A finite volume discretization of the conservation equations is used with a four level multigrid method to accelerate the convergence. The tests performed which were in the range of 100 ≤ Re ≤ 5000, show that the Yee-Roe-Davis symmetric scheme generates results in very good agreement with the benchmark results over this range of Re. The MUSCL upwind scheme accuracy deteriorates with the increasing Re.     

Invariance and independence in multivariate distribution theory

Several general results are presented whereby various properties of independence or conditional independence between certain random variables may be deduced from the symmetries enjoyed by their joint distributions. These are applied to the distributions of sample correlation and canonical correlation coefficients when the underlying data-distribution has suitable orthogonal invariance. A typical result is that, for a random sample of observations on three independent normal variables, r₁₂, r₁₃, and r_23.1 are mutually independent.     

Symmetric nonnegative realizability via partitioned majorization

A sufficient condition for symmetric nonnegative realizability of a spectrum is given in terms of (weak) majorization of a partition of the negative eigenvalues by a selection of the positive eigenvalues. If there are more than two positive eigenvalues, an additional condition, besides majorization, is needed on the partition. This generalizes observations of Suleǐmanova and Loewy about the cases of one and two positive eigenvalues, respectively. It may be used to provide insight into realizability of 5-element spectra and beyond.     

Metacyclic groups and modular forms

In the paper we find the metacyclic groups of the form 〈a, b:a ^m=e, b ^s=e, b ⁻¹ ab=a ^r〉, wherem=3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 23, such that the modular forms associated with all elements of these groups by some faithful representation are multiplicative η-products. Sobolev type inequalities for general symmetric forms

A general version of the Sobolev type inequality, including both the classical Sobolev inequality and the logarithmic Sobolev one, is studied for general symmetric forms by using isoperimetric constants. Some necessary and sufficient conditions are presented as results. The main results are illustrated by two examples of birth-death processes.

     

On Nonlinear Integro-differential Operators in Generalized Orlicz–Sobolev Spaces

A nonlinear integral operator T of the form (Tf)(s)=∫_G K(t, f (σ(s, t))) dμ(t), for sG, is defined and investigated in the measure space (G, Σ, μ), where f and K are vector-valued functions with values in normed linear spaces E and F, respectively. The results are applied to the case of integro-differential operators in generalized Orlicz–Sobolev spaces. There are studied problems of existence, embeddings, and approximation by means of T.     

A class of Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature

It is known that every locally projectively flat Finsler metric is of scalar flag curvature. Conversely, it may not be true. In this paper, for a certain class of Finsler metrics, we prove that it is locally projectively flat if and only if it is of scalar flag curvature. Moreover, we establish a class of new non-trivial examples.
