Prefiltration technique via aggregation for constructing low‐density high‐quality factorized sparse approximate inverse preconditionings

This paper considers a new approach to a priori sparsification of the sparsity pattern of the factorized approximate inverses (FSAI) preconditioner using the so‐called vector aggregation technique. The suggested approach consists in construction of the FSAI preconditioner to the aggregated matrix with a prescribed sparsity pattern. Then small entries of the computed ‘aggregated’ FSAI preconditioning matrix are dropped, and the resulting pointwise sparsity pattern is used to construct the low‐density block sparsity pattern of the FSAI preconditioning matrix to the original matrix. This approach allows to minimize (sometimes significantly) the construction costs of low‐density high‐quality FSAI preconditioners. Applying a Mode Selector to Improve the Pulse-Compression Performance of Asymmetric-Coupled-Waveguide-Based Dispersion Compensators

An InGaAsP slab-type asymmetric-coupled-waveguide-based dispersion compensator with a mode selector has been designed and fabricated. The mode selector is necessary to select either a symmetric [with a positive group-velocity dispersion (GVD)] or antisymmetric (with a negative GVD) supermode. These supermodes exist simultaneously in the dispersion-compensation region of the device. Pulse-compression experiments were used to test the dispersion compensator, evaluating the function of the mode selector. A theoretical study of the experimental results shows that the mode selector obtains a very strong selectivity (nearly 100%) for the antisymmetric supermode.     

Separating points of measures on effect algebras

We prove the existence of separating points for every countable family of nonatomic σ-additive modular measures on a σ-complete lattice ordered effect algebra.      

Quantization of lie Bialgebras via the Formality of the operad of Little Disks

We give a proof of the Etingof–Kazhdan theorem on quantization of Lie bialgebras based on the formality of the chain operad of little disks and show that the Grothendieck–Teichmüller group acts non-trivially on the corresponding quantization functors. On the Patterson–Sullivan Measure for Geometrically Finite Groups Acting on Complex or Quaternionic Hyperbolic Space

The goal of this paper is to provide a tool, the Global Measure Formula, that will facilitate the study of the limit set of discrete geometrically finite groups of isometries of the rank one symmetric spaces. We consider the shadow of a ball from a fixed reference point onto the boundary, and prove a formula that describes the measure of the shadow in terms of the center of the shadowed ball, generalizing a result from real hyperbolic geometry.

Constructing orthogonal pandiagonal Latin squares and panmagic squares from modular n‐queens solutions

In this article, we show how to construct pairs of orthogonal pandiagonal Latin squares and panmagic squares from certain types of modular n‐queens solutions. We prove that when these modular n‐queens solutions are symmetric, the panmagic squares thus constructed will be associative, where for an n × n associative magic square A = (a_ij), for all i and j it holds that a_ij + an?i?1,n?j?1 = c for a fixed c. We further show how to construct orthogonal Latin squares whose modular difference diagonals are Latin from any modular n‐queens solution. As well, we analyze constructing orthogonal pandiagonal Latin squares from particular classes of non‐linear modular n‐queens solutions. These pandiagonal Latin squares are not row cyclic, giving a partial solution to a problem of Hedayat. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs 15: 221–234, 2007     

Notes on symmetric g-functions

A number of generalized metric spaces have been defined or characterized in terms of g-functions. Symmetric g-functions are discussed by C. Good, D. Jennings and A. M. Mohamad. In this paper, some questions about symmetric g-functions are answered, particularly it is shown that every sym-wg-space is expandable.
