Assessing the Error Probability of the Model Selection Test

The asymptotic error probability of Linhart's model selection test isevaluated, and compared with the nominal significance level. We examine thecase where the expected discrepancies of the candidate models from the truemodel are asymptotically equal. The local alternatives method is employed inthe limiting operation of the asymptotic evaluation. Although the errorprobability under the null hypothesis is actually shown to be equal to orless than the level for most situations, intolerable violations of the errorcontrol are observed for nested models: It is often erroneously concludedthat the smaller model is significantly better than the larger model. Toprevent this violation, a modification of Linhart's test statistic isproposed. The effectiveness of the proposed test is confirmed throughtheoretical analysis and numerical simulations.

Latin Squares without Orthogonal Mates

In 1779 Euler proved that for every even n there exists a latin square of order n that has no orthogonal mate, and in 1944 Mann proved that for every n of the form 4k + 1, k ≥ 1, there exists a latin square of order n that has no orthogonal mate. Except for the two smallest cases, n = 3 and n = 7, it is not known whether a latin square of order n = 4k + 3 with no orthogonal mate exists or not. We complete the determination of all n for which there exists a mate-less latin square of order n by proving that, with the exception of n = 3, for all n = 4k + 3 there exists a latin square of order n with no orthogonal mate. We will also show how the methods used in this paper can be applied more generally by deriving several earlier non-orthogonality results.     

Electron attenuation lengths in fullerene and fullerides

Using X-ray photoemission measurements, we have determined the attenuation length of C 1s photoelectrons in C₆₀ film to be 21.5 Å with the incident photon energy of Mg Kα radiation. The inelastic mean free path calculated with the TPP-2M algorithm coincides fairly well with the experimentally determined attenuation length, indicating the validity of the algorithm to fullerene and fullerides. The inelastic mean free paths for some fullerides, i.e. K₃C₆₀, K₆C₆₀, Ba₄C₆₀, Sm_2.75C₆₀ and Sm₆C₆₀ are calculated to help the quantitative analyses of the photoemission spectra for these compounds.
