Countable Products of Čech-scattered supercomplete spaces

We prove by using well-founded trees that a countable product of supercomplete spaces, scattered with respect to ech-complete subsets, is supercomplete. This result extends results given in [1], [5], [6], [19], [26] and its proof improves that given in [19].     

Analysis of multiobjective decision problems by the indifference band approach

A new approach, based on indifference band, for analyzing problems with multiple objectives is described. The relations of this approach to some previous results are given. Methods for generating nondominated solutions are supplied.     

Critical exponents of discrete groups and -spectrum

Let be a noncompact semisimple Lie group and an arbitrary discrete, torsion-free subgroup of . Let be the bottom of the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the locally symmetric space , and let be the exponent of growth of . If has rank , then these quantities are related by a well-known formula due to Elstrodt, Patterson, Sullivan and Corlette. In this note we generalize that relation to the higher rank case by estimating from above and below by quadratic polynomials in . As an application we prove a rigiditiy property of lattices.

     

Convergence of harmonic maps on the Poincaré disk

Let be a sequence of locally quasiconformal harmonic maps on the unit disk with respect to the Poincaré metric. Suppose that the energy densities of are uniformly bounded from below by a positive constant and locally uniformly bounded from above. Then there is a subsequence of that locally uniformly converges on , and the limit function is either a locally quasiconformal harmonic map of the Poincaré disk or a constant. Especially, if the limit function is not a constant, the subsequence can be chosen to satisfy some stronger conditions. As an application, it is proved that every point of the space , a subspace of the universal Teichmüller space, can be represented by a quasiconformal harmonic map that is an asymptotic hyperbolic isometry.

     

Coordinates in two variables over a -algebra

This paper studies coordinates in two variables over a -algebra. It gives several ways to characterize such coordinates. Also, various results about coordinates in two variables that were previously only known for fields, are extended to arbitrary -algebras.

     

Almost flat locally finite coverings of the sphere

For any subset A of the unit sphere of a Banach space X and for [0,2) the notion of -flatness is introduced as a measure of non-flatness of A. For any positive , construction of locally finite tilings of the unit sphere by -flat sets is carried out under suitable -renormings of X in a quite general context; moreover, a characterization of spaces having separable dual is provided in terms of the existence of such tilings. Finally, relationships between the possibility of getting such tilings of the unit sphere in the given norm and smoothness properties of the norm are discussed.     

Spaces of Densely Continuous Forms, USCO and Minimal USCO Maps

Our paper studies the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on the space of densely continuous forms (introduced by Hammer and McCoy (1997)), usco and minimal usco maps. We generalize and complete results from Hammer and McCoy (1997) concerning the space D(X,Y) of densely continuous forms from X to Y. Let X be a Hausdorff topological space, (Y,d) be a metric space and D _k (X,Y) the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on D(X,Y). We prove the following main results: D _k (X,Y) is metrizable iff D _k (X,Y) is first countable iff X is hemicompact. This result gives also a positive answer to question 4.1 of McCoy (1998). If moreover X is a locally compact hemicompact space and (Y,d) is a locally compact complete metric space, then D _k (X,Y) is completely metrizable, thus improving a result from McCoy (1998). We study also the question, suggested by Hammer and McCoy (1998), when two compatible metrics on Y generate the same topologies of uniform convergence on compact sets on D(X,Y). The completeness of the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets on the space of set-valued maps with closed graphs, usco and minimal usco maps is also discussed.     

Concretely Locally Presentable and Locally Generated Categories

We give concrete versions of the characterizations of locally -presentable (resp. -generated) categories as categories of models of (resp. weakly) -ary limit-theories and of (resp. weakly) -ary essentially algebraic theories. By concrete we mean that starting with a category of -structures, the theories obtained are extensions of the original ones, and the equivalences of categories are concrete isomorphisms. -presentable and -generated objects are also investigated from this viewpoint.
