Etude du Systeme Ternaire H2O-Al(NO3)3-Mg(NO3)2 I - Isothermes 15, 25, 30, 40 et 50°C

The solid-liquid equilibria of the ternary system H₂ O-Al(NO₃ )₃ -Mg(NO₃ )₂ were studied at 15, 25, 30, 40 and 50°C by using a synthetic method which allows to determine all the characteristic points of isothermal sections. In all isotherms the liquidus exhibit two curves corresponding to the saturation in Mg(NO₃ )₂ ⋅6H₂ O and Al(NO₃ )₃ ⋅9H₂ O. Neither double salts nor mixed crystals are observed in the temperature and composition field studied. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Recent advances on thermoelectric materials

By converting waste heat into electricity through the thermoelectric power of solids without producing greenhouse gas emissions, thermoelectric generators could be an important part of the solution to today’s energy challenge. There has been a resurgence in the search for new materials for advanced thermoelectric energy conversion applications. In this paper, we will review recent efforts on improving thermoelectric efficiency. Particularly, several novel proof-of-principle approaches such as phonon disorder in phonon-glass-electron crystals, low dimensionality in nanostructured materials and charge-spin-orbital degeneracy in strongly correlated systems on thermoelectric performance will be discussed.      

Analysis of film strain and stress in a film-substrate cantilever system

The bending problem of a magnetic film-nonmagnetic substrate cantilever system is studied by using the principle of energy minimization. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of geometrical and physical parameter dependence of the neutral plane, internal film stress and strain of the cantilever system, and then the influence of such a parameter on the bending characteristic is presented. The results indicate, owing to the anisotropic expanding feature of the magnetostriction, that the neutral plane is generally anisotropic, and moves downwards rapidly with the increasing thickness ratio. Meanwhile, the bounding rigidity of substrate on the film will decrease with the increasing thickness ratio, and thus release the film stress, i.e., it decreases, but the film strain increases. The effect of Poisson’s ratio of the materials on the film strain, the stress and the neutral plane in the direction transverse to the magnetization is prominent. For the strain and the stress in the magnetization, however, the role of Poisson’s ratio is inconspicuous. This property is due to the initiative elongating (or contracting) feature of the magnetic film along its magnetization. A combination of accreditation and certification in an evolving process at EMPA: A management system to meet ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and EN 45001

 The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA) have established a quality assurance system based on EN 45001 which meets the requirements for accreditation of all EMPA's testing activities. As testing is only a part of EMPA's range of activities, and is performed in decentralised departments, the system does not satisfy the management needs. The fundamental reorganisation of EMPA's St. Gallen site was used as an opportunity to implement an overall process-oriented management system which also included quality and the needs for accreditation. Later, an environmental management system was added and then certified for ISO 9001 and 14001. The system consists of a "Management Manual" for the St. Gallen site and a customised "Quality Manual" for each department. One of the key elements is a comprehensive review and planning procedure covering all business aspects.     

Liquid–Vapor Phase Transitions for Systems with Finite-Range Interactions

We consider particles in ^d , d2, interacting via attractive pair and repulsive four-body potentials of the Kac type. Perturbing about mean-field theory, valid when the interaction range becomes infinite, we prove rigorously the existence of a liquid–gas phase transition when the interaction range is finite but long compared to the interparticle spacing for a range of temperature.     

Extraction of subsystems “Majorized” by the rademacher system
