Modelling the Recurrence of Bladder Cancer

The risk of a new tumor recurrence after transurethral resection (surgical operation) in patients with primary superficial bladder carcinoma is evaluated. As the exact time of the event is not known, it is suggested to consider interval-censored survival data methodology. We use the model of Farrington to perform a prognostic model for predicting a new recurrence and to determine the clinicopathologic factors associated within interval-censored data framework. The implementation of this method is easy using standard statistical packages. Anyway, we use diagnostic methods for the validation of the model developed by the same author for interval-censored data. The obtained model is easily interpretable and let us to individualize the course of follow-up and treatment of each patient in order to improve the patient’s quality of life.      

Normal modes and quality factors of spherical dielectric resonators: I — shielded dielectric sphere

Electromagnetic theoretic analysis of shielded homogeneous and isotropic dielectric spheres has been made. Characteristic equations for the TE and TM modes have been derived. Dielectric spheres of radii of the order of μm size are found suitable for the optical frequency region whereas for the microwave region radii of the order of mm size are found suitable. Parameters suitable for their application in the optical and microwave frequency ranges have been used to compute the frequencies corresponding to the normal modes for the TE and TM modes. Expressions for the quality factors for realistic resonators, i.e., for a dielectric sphere with a non-zero conductivity and a metal shield with a finite conductivity have also been derived for the TE and TM modes. Computations of the quality factors have been made for resonators with parameters suitable for the optical and the microwave regions.     

Electromagnetic form factors of nucleons in a relativistic square-root potential model of independent quarks

The nucleon electromagnetic form factorsG _E ^P (q²),G _M ^P (q²) and the axial-vector form factor G_A(q²) are studied in a relativistic model of independent quarks confined by an equally mixed scalar-vector square root potentialV _q(r)=1/2(1+γ ⁰)(ar ^1/2+ν ₀) taking into account the appropriate centre-of-mass corrections. The respective root-mean-square radii associated withG _E ^P (q²) and G _A (q²) come out as [〈r ²〉 _E ^P ]^1/2=0.86 fm and 〈r _A ² 〉^1/2=0.88 fm. Restoration of chiral symmetry in this model is discussed to derive the pion-nucleon form factorG _πNN(q²) and consequently the pion-nucleon coupling constant is obtained asg _πNN(q²)=12.81 as compared tog _πNN(q²)_exp⋍13.     

A note on the simple structural regression model

In this paper we investigate some aspects like estimation and hypothesis testing in the simple structural regression model with measurement errors. Use is made of orthogonal parametrizations obtained in the literature. Emphasis is placed on some properties of the maximum likelihood estimators and also on the distribution of the likelihood ratio statistics.

A Thomas-Fermi type picture and the electromagnetic structure of the nucleon

Using a Thomas-Fermi type picture of the nucleon as a dense system of quarks and antiquarks, we give a rationale for the ‘dipole’ nature, scaling and other characteristics of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. Similar considerations are then given for the electromagnetic structure of the pion.     

The vibrational spectra of (CH3)3SiX (S=H, F, Br) molecules, revisited Transferable scale factor sets for methylsilane derivatives

The joint experimental and theoretical study of the vibrational spectra of the molecular series (CH3)3SiX (with X=H, F and Br) is carried out. Data from newly recorded IR and Raman spectra for the bromo derivative, experimental data obtained previously for the remaining species, DFT theoretical calculations and the use of the SQMFF procedure have allowed us to propose common patterns and to unify criteria in their assignment. In addition, two sets of averaged scale factors for the B3LYP force field obtained with two different basis sets (6-31G* and DZP+diff) have been proposed for the common bulky moiety of that molecular series. These parameters were used successfully in order to reproduce the frequency of the bands assigned to the (CH3)3Si- group in the vibrational spectra of the corresponding silanolic and methoxy derivatives, i.e., trimethylsilanol and methoxytrimethylsilane, proving their transferability.
