Spectrum of a homogeneous graph

We describe the spectrum of the Laplacian for a homogeneous graph acted on by a discrete group. This follows from a more general result which describes the spectrum of a convolution operator on a homogeneous space of a locally compact group. We also prove a version of Harnack inequality for a Schrödinger operator on an invariant homogeneous graph.     

Existence, upper and lower solutions and quasilinearization for singular differential equations

In this paper, we discuss existence theorems in the presenceof upper and lower solutions as well as the method of quasilinearization(QSL) for general non-linear second-order singular ordinarydifferential equations. We show the existence of solutions underthe assumption of weak continuity of the non-linear part. Ifthe non-linear part is monotone decreasing, a solution may beobtained by the QSL method as the strong limit of a quadraticallyconvergent sequence of approximate solutions. Under strongerassumptions on the linear and the non-linear parts, a solutionis quadratically bracketed between two monotone sequences ofapproximate solutions of certain related linear equations.     

Abstract Volterra operators

We propose a new general definition of Volterra operators. Several types of evolutionary operators, including Volterra ones in the sense of A.N. Tikhonov, satisfy this definition. For equations with generalized Volterra operators we introduce the notions of local, global, and maximally extended solutions. For solutions to nonlinear equations we formulate the existence, uniqueness, and extendability conditions. The theorems proved in this paper imply both known and new results on the solvability of concrete equations. We adduce an example of the application of obtained results to the study of the Cauchy problem for functional differential equations.

Constantin Carathéodory and the axiomatic thermodynamics

The birth, raise, development and fortunes of a fundamental theory in thermodynamics, the axiomatic thermodynamics, a creation of Constantin Carathéodory, is thoroughly presented together with a summary of Carathéodory's biography. Axiomatic thermodynamics is centered around some interesting properties of Pfaffian differential equations, which are here introduced and used for some well-known cases in thermodynamics.     

The Fredholm Alternative for Functional Differential Equations of Mixed Type

We prove a Fredholm alternative theorem for a class of asymptotically hyperbolic linear differential difference equations of mixed type. We also establish the cocycle property and the spectral flow property for such equations, providing an effective means of calculating the Fredholm index. Such systems can arise from equations which describe traveling waves in a spatial lattice.     

Stability in critical cases of a holonomic mechanical system with two degrees of freedom subject to impacts

Stability conditions for a holonomic impulsive mechanical system with two degrees of freedom in the critical case of one pair of complex-conjugate multipliers are established. Visco-penalization of the sum of two monotone operators

A new type of approximating curve for finding a particular zero of the sum of two maximal monotone operators in a Hilbert space is investigated. This curve consists of the zeros of perturbed problems in which one operator is replaced with its Yosida approximation and a viscosity term is added. As the perturbation vanishes, the curve is shown to converge to the zero of the sum that solves a particular strictly monotone variational inequality. As an off-spring of this result, we obtain an approximating curve for finding a particular zero of the sum of several maximal monotone operators. Applications to convex optimization are discussed.     

An Affine Scaling Interior Trust Region Method via Optimal Path for Solving Monotone Variational Inequality Problem with Linear Constraints

Based on a differentiable merit function proposed by Taji et al. in ＂Math. Prog. Stud., 58, 1993, 369-383＂, the authors propose an affine scaling interior trust region strategy via optimal path to modify Newton method for the strictly monotone variational inequality problem subject to linear equality and inequality constraints. By using the eigensystem decomposition and affine scaling mapping, the authors form an affine scaling optimal curvilinear path very easily in order to approximately solve the trust region subproblem. Theoretical analysis is given which shows that the proposed algorithm is globally convergent and has a local quadratic convergence rate under some reasonable conditions.
