On the Diameter of Plane Curves

Recently, differential geometric properties of embedded projective varieties have gained increasing interest. In this note, we consider plane algebraic curves equipped with the Fubini--Study metric from₂ () and give an estimate for the diameter in terms of the degree, initiated in a paper by F. A. Bogomolov.     

Homotopy Structures for Algebras over a Monad

Let T be a monad over a category A. Then a homotopy structure for A, defined by a cocylinder P : A A, or path-endofunctor, can be lifted to the category A ^T of Eilenberg–Moore algebras over T, provided that P is consistent with T in a natural sense, i.e. equipped with a natural transformation : T P P T satisfying some obvious axioms. In this way, homotopy can be lifted from well-known, basic situations to various categories of algebras for instance, from topological spaces to topological semigroups, or spaces over a fixed space (fibrewise homotopy), or actions of a fixed topological group (equivariant homotopy); from categories to strict monoidal categories; from chain complexes to associative chain algebras. The interest is given by the possibility of lifting the homotopy operations (as faces, degeneracy, connections, reversion, interchange, vertical composition, etc.) and their axioms from A to A ^T , just by verifying the consistency between these operations and : T P P T. When this holds, the structure we obtain on our category of algebras is sufficiently powerful to ensure the main general properties of homotopy.     

Homotopy of Non-Modular Partitions and the Whitehouse Module

We present a class of subposets of the partition lattice _n with the following property: The order complex is homotopy equivalent to the order complex of _n – 1, and the S _n -module structure of the homology coincides with a recently discovered lifting of the S _n – 1-action on the homology of _n – 1. This is the Whitehouse representation on Robinson's space of fully-grown trees, and has also appeared in work of Getzler and Kapranov, Mathieu, Hanlon and Stanley, and Babson et al.One example is the subposet P _n ⁿ – 1 of the lattice of set partitions _n , obtained by removing all elements with a unique nontrivial block. More generally, for 2 k n – 1, let Q _n ^k denote the subposet of the partition lattice _n obtained by removing all elements with a unique nontrivial block of size equal to k, and let P _n ^k = _{i = 2} ^k Q _n ⁱ . We show that P _n ^k is Cohen-Macaulay, and that P _n ^k and Q _n ^k are both homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension (n – 4), with Betti number . The posets Q _n ^k are neither shellable nor Cohen-Macaulay. We show that the S _n -module structure of the homology generalises the Whitehouse module in a simple way.We also present a short proof of the well-known result that rank-selection in a poset preserves the Cohen-Macaulay property.     

Higher-order streamfunction-vorticity formulation of 2D steady-state Navier-Stokes equations

Based on regular boundary element method and a kind of linearity invariance under homotopy, a kind of numerical scheme of 2D steady-state Navier-Stokes equation in streamfunction-vorticity formulation is described. The flow inside a square cavity is used to illustrate this numerical scheme.

On lower bounds for theL 2-Wasserstein metric in a Hilbert space

We provide two families of lower bounds for theL ²-Wasserstein metric in separable Hilbert spaces which depend on the basis chosen for the space. Then we focus on one of these families and we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the supremum in it to be attained. In the finite dimensional case, we identify the basis which provides the most accurate lower bound in the family.Research partially supported by the Spanish DGICYT under grants PB91-0306-02-00, 01 and 02.     

Counterexamples in measuring the distance between binary trees

Examples are given to show that the closest partition distance measure need not agree with the nearest neighbor interchange distance for unordered labeled binary trees. Proposed algorithms for computing the closest partition distance are shown to be of exponential complexity and hence may not be useful in approximating the nearest neighbor interchange distance.     

On the homotopy type of (<Emphasis Type="Italic">n</Emphasis>-1)-connected (3<Emphasis Type="Italic">n</Emphasis>+1)-dimensional free chain Lie algebra

Let R be a subring ring of Q. We reserve the symbol p for the least prime which is not a unit in R; if R ?Q, then p=∞. Denote by DGL _n ^np , n≥1, the category of (n-1)-connected np-dimensional differential graded free Lie algebras over R. In [1] D. Anick has shown that there is a reasonable concept of homotopy in the category DGL _n ^np . In this work we intend to answer the following two questions: Given an object (L(V), ?) in DGL _n ³ⁿ⁺² and denote by S(L(V), ?) the class of objects homotopy equivalent to (L(V), ?). How we can characterize a free dgl to belong to S(L(V), ?)? Fix an object (L(V), ?) in DGL _n ³ⁿ⁺² . How many homotopy equivalence classes of objects (L(W), δ) in DGL _n ³ⁿ⁺² such that H _* (W, d′)?H _* (V, d) are there? Note that DGL _n ³ⁿ⁺² is a subcategory of DGL _n ^np when p>3. Our tool to address this problem is the exact sequence of Whitehead associated with a free dgl.
