Weakly $I$-Semiregular Rings and $I$-Semiregular Rings

Let $I$ be an ideal of a ring $R$. We call $R$ weakly $I$-semiregular if $R$/$I$ is a von Neumann regular ring. This definition generalizes $I$-semiregular rings. We give a series of characterizations and properties of this class of rings. Moreover, we also give some properties of $I$-semiregular rings.     

A contribution to the global formulation of the higher-order Poincaré-Cartan form

The global formulation of the higher-order Poincaré-Cartan form for Lagrangian field theories in the calculus of variations is re-examined in terms of the theory of lifts of tensor fields on a manifold to its higher-order prolongated jet bundles.Partially supported by CNPq, Brazil, Proc. Convexity and the Average Curvature of Plane Curves

The average curvature of a rectifiable closed curve in R2 is its total absolute curvature divided by its length. If a rectifiable closed curve in R2 is contained in the interior of a convex set D then its average curvature is at least as large as the average curvature of the simple closed curve D which bounds the convex set.     

On co-semihereditary rings

A ringR is left co-semihereditary (strongly left co-semihereditary) if every finitely cogenerated factor of a finitely cogenerated (arbitrary) injective leftR-module is injective. A left co-semihereditary ring, which is not strongly left co-semihereditary, is given to answer a question of Miller and Tumidge in the negative. If _R U _S defines a Morita duality,R is proved to be left co-semihereditary (left semihereditmy) if and only ifS is right semihereditary (right co-semihereditary). Assuming thatS⩾R is an almost excellent extension,S is shown to be (strongly) right co-semihereditary if and only ifR is (strongly) right co-semihereditary. 拟-Armendariz模

For a right R-module N, we introduce the quasi-Armendariz modules which are a common generalization of the Armendariz modules and the quasi-Armendariz rings, and investigate their properties. Moreover, we prove that NR is quasi-Armendariz if and only if Mm(N)Mm(R) is quasi-Armendariz if and only if Tm(N)Tm(R) is quasi-Armendariz, where Mm(N) and Tm(N) denote the m×m full matrix and the m×m upper triangular matrix over N, respectively. NR is quasi-Armendariz if and only if N[x]R[x] is quasi-Armendariz. It is shown that every quasi-Baer module is quasi-Armendariz module.     

Surfaces of Demoulin: differential geometry, Bäcklund transformation and integrability

The surfaces of Demoulin constitute an important subclass of surfaces in projective differential geometry which arise in many seemingly unrelated geometric constructions. Analytically, they are described by a two-component system which coincides with the D₃⁽¹⁾ Toda lattice. We review some of the most important geometric properties of the Demoulin surfaces and construct a Bäcklund transformation which may be specialized to the well-known Bäcklund transformation for the Tzitzeica equation governing affine spheres in affine geometry.     

Commutator representations of differential calculi on the quantum group SUq(2)

Let (Γ, d) be the 3D-calculus or the 4D_±-calculus on the quantum group SU_q (2). We describe all pairs (π, F) of a ^*-representation π of (SU_q(2)) and of a symmetric operator F on the representation space satisfying a technical condition concerning its domain such that there exist a homomorphism of first order differential calculi which maps dx into the commutator [iF, π(x)] for x ε (SU_q (2)). As an application commutator representations of the two-dimensional left-covariant calculus on Podles quantum 2-sphere S_qc² with c = 0 are given.     

Walking an unknown street with bounded detour

A polygon with two distinguished vertices, s and g, is called a street if the two boundary chains from s to g are mutually weakly visible. For a mobile robot with on-board vision system we describe a strategy for finding a short path from s to g in a street not known in advance, and prove that the length of the path created does not exceed 1 + π times the length of the shortest path from s to g. Experiments suggest that our strategy is much better than this, as no ratio bigger than 1.8 has yet been observed. This is complemented by a lower bound of 1.41 for the relative detour each strategy can be forced to generate.
