Probability Inequalities and Limit Theorems for Generalized L-Statistics

We obtain exponential upper bounds for tails of distributions of generalized L-statistics based on a sample from an exponential distribution. We prove the asymptotic normality of generalized L-statistics based on a sample from the uniform distribution on [0,1] and of L-statistics with decomposed kernels (without any restrictions on the sample distribution type).     

The Structure of the (Outer) Automorphism Group of a Bieberbach Group

Referring to Tits alternative, we develop a necessary and sufficient condition to decide whether the normalizer of a finite group of integral matrices is polycyclic-by-finite or is containing a non-Abelian free group. This result is of fundamental importance to conclude whether the (outer) automorphism group of a Bieberbach group is polycyclic-by-finite or has a non-cyclic free subgroup.     

Free, Isometric Circle Actions on Compact Symmetric Spaces

Let S=G/K be a strongly irreducible, simply connected, compact symmetric space and let be its group of isometries. We classify the symmetric spaces among these that admit free, isometric circle actions. The existence of such actions is important in constructing examples of manifolds with positive sectional curvature.     

Passive Runge–Kutta Methods—Properties, Parametric Representation, and Order Conditions

In this paper, a new class of Runge–Kutta methods is introduced. Some basic properties of this subgroup of algebraically stable methods are presented and a complete parametric representation is given. Necessary and sufficient order conditions for lower order methods as well as sufficient order conditions for higher order methods are derived yielding a significantly reduced number of conditions when compared with general Runge–Kutta methods. Design examples conclude this paper.

Second order mixed type duality in multiobjective programming problems

Second order mixed type dual is introduced for multiobjective programming problems. Results about weak duality, strong duality, and strict converse duality are established under generalized second order (F,ρ)-convexity assumptions. These results generalize the duality results recently given by Aghezzaf and Hachimi involving generalized first order (F,ρ)-convexity conditions.     

Differentiators and the geometry of polynomials

In 1959, Davis introduced the concept of a differentiator of an operator on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. We prove that every such operator possesses a differentiator. We also use the theory of differentiators to solve several problems in the geometry of polynomials. For instance, we answer in the affirmative a twenty year old unsolved conjecture of Schoenberg, a related conjecture of Katsoprinakis and a fifty year old unsolved conjecture of De Bruijn and Springer.     

Oscillation of second order neutral delay differential equations of Emden-Fowler type

We present new oscillation criteria for the second order nonlinear neutral delay differential equation [y(t)-py(t-τ)]'+ q(t)y ^λ (g(t)) sgn y(g(t)) = 0, t ≧ t ₀. Our results solve an open problem posed by James S.W . Wong [24]. The relevance of our results becomes clear due to a carefully selected example. On the Similarity between Volterra Operators and Transformation Operators for Integro-Differential Operators of Fractional Order

We establish the similarity between certain Volterra integral operators and the Riemann--Liouville fractional integration operator as well as the existence of a triangular transformation operator for integro-differential equations of fractional order. The results obtained are consistent with similar results for the case of integer order.     

On a Construction of Fast Direct Solvers

Fast direct solvers for the Poisson equation with homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions on special triangles and tetrahedra are constructed. The domain given is extended by symmetrization or skew symmetrization onto a rectangle or a rectangular parallelepiped and a fast direct solver is used there. All extendable domains are found. Eigenproblems are also considered.
