In this paper, an original second‐order upwind scheme for convection terms is described and implemented in the context of a Control‐Volume Finite‐Element Method (CVFEM). The proposed scheme is a second‐order extension of the first‐order MAss‐Weighted upwind (MAW) scheme proposed by Saabas and Baliga (Numer. Heat Transfer 1994; 26B :381–407). The proposed second‐order scheme inherits the well‐known stability characteristics of the MAW scheme, but exhibits less artificial viscosity and ensures much higher accuracy. Consequently, and in contrast with nearly all second‐order upwind schemes available in the literature, the proposed second‐order MAW scheme does not need limiters. Some test cases including two pure convection problems, the driven cavity and steady and unsteady flows over a circular cylinder, have been undertaken successfully to validate the new scheme. The verification tests show that the proposed scheme exhibits a low level of artificial viscosity in the pure convection problems; exhibits second‐order accuracy for the driven cavity; gives accurate reattachment lengths for low‐Reynolds steady flow over a circular cylinder; and gives constant‐amplitude vortex shedding for the case of high‐Reynolds unsteady flow over a circular cylinder. In this paper three‐dimensional lubrication flow of grease is analysed numerically. The lubrication flow configuration is formed by two ellipsoid rollers. The load is assumed to be light enough for the lubrication mode to be purely hydrodynamic. The fluid behaviour is modelled using the Herschel–Bulkley model, and a two‐dimensional modified Reynolds equation is derived. The numerical solutions are obtained by using a hybrid spectral/iterative technique and the Galerkin projection scheme. The effects of the material and geometrical parameters on pressure distribution are emphasized in the study. The investigation is conducted for a situation where the two ellipsoids are fully immersed in a grease lubricant. The effect of the geometry on the pressure distribution is determined by varying the ratio of the semi‐axes and the minimum gap of the two rollers, respectively. The effect of the material parameters is examined by varying the power‐law index and yield stress. It is found that the pressure distribution is strongly influenced by the shape of the rollers, the size of the minimum gap of the rollers and the rheological parameters. Six different models were evaluated for reproducing internal solitary waves which occur and propagate in a stratified flow field with a sharp interface. Three stages were used to compute internal solitary waves in a stratified field: (1) first‐phase computation of momentum equations, (2) second‐phase computation of momentum equations, which corresponds to computing the Poisson's equation, and (3) density computation. The six models discussed in this paper consisted of combinations of four different schemes, a three‐point combined compact difference scheme (CCD), a normal central difference scheme (CDS), a cubic‐polynomial interpolation (CIP), and an exactly conservative semi‐Lagrangian scheme (CIP‐CSL2). The residual cutting method was used to solve the Poisson's equation. Three tests were used to confirm the validity of the computations using KdV theory; i.e. the incremental wave speed and amplitude of internal solitary waves, the maximum horizontal velocity and amplitude, and the wave form. In terms of the shape of an internal solitary wave, using CIP for momentum equations was found to provide better performance than CCD. These results suggest one of the most appropriate scheme for reproducing internal solitary waves may be one in which CIP is used for momentum equations and CCD to solve the Poisson's equation.
