Estimation of the Multivariate Normal Precision Matrix under the Entropy Loss

Let X ₁, , X _n (n > p) be a random sample from multivariate normal distribution N _p (, ), where R ^p and is a positive definite matrix, both and being unknown. We consider the problem of estimating the precision matrix ^–1. In this paper it is shown that for the entropy loss, the best lower-triangular affine equivariant minimax estimator of ^–1 is inadmissible and an improved estimator is explicitly constructed. Note that our improved estimator is obtained from the class of lower-triangular scale equivariant estimators.     

An ODE Model of the Motion of Pelagic Fish

A system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is derived from a discrete system of Vicsek, Czirók et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75(6):1226–1229, 1995], describing the motion of a school of fish. Classes of linear and stationary solutions of the ODEs are found and their stability explored using equivariant bifurcation theory. The existence of periodic and toroidal solutions is also proven under deterministic perturbations and structurally stable heteroclinic connections are found. Applications of the model to the migration of the capelin, a pelagic fish that undertakes an extensive migration in the North Atlantic, are discussed and simulation of the ODEs presented.     

Points of Bounded Height on Equivariant Compactifications of Vector Groups, I

We prove asymptotic formulas for the number of rational points of bounded height on certain equivariant compactifications of the affine plane.     

Estimating the covariance matrix and the generalized variance under a symmetric loss

For estimating the power of a generalized variance under a multivariate normal distribution with unknown means, the inadmissibility of the best affine equivariant estimator relative to the symmetric loss is shown, and a class of improved estimators is given. The problem of estimating the covariance matrix is also discussed.     

Bredon cohomology of cyclic geometric realization of G -cyclic sets

We define equivariant cyclic and Hochschild cohomology modules of a cyclic objectX in the category ofG-sets and relate them with the Bredon cohomologies of the cyclic geometric realization |X|^cy.

Invariants de Maslov équivariants

We construct two cohomological invariants associated to pairs of Lagrangian sub-bundles of a symplectic bundle on a compact manifold upon which a compact Lie group is acting. The first invariant, which we call the classical equivariant Maslov H-invariant, provides an obstruction to Lagrangian transversality and lives in the Borel cohomology. The second invariant, which we call the equivariant Maslov U-invariant, generalises the author's results in K-Theory 13 (1998), 347–361 to the equivariant context and provides a necessary and sufficient condition for equivariant Lagrangian transversality, up to homotopic stability, and lives in the U-theory (intermediate between the real complex K-theories). As an application, we show that two Lagrangian sub-bundles of a symplectic bundle on a homogeneous space are always stably transverse.
