Dynamic thermoviscoelastic thermistor problem with contact and nonmonotone friction

Abstract

The paper studies the evolution of the thermomechanical and electric state of a thermoviscoelastic thermistor that is in frictional contact with a reactive foundation. The mechanical process is dynamic, while the electric process is quasistatic. Friction is modeled with a nonmonotone relation between the tangential traction and tangential velocity. Frictional heat generation is taken into account and so is the strong dependence of the electric conductivity on the temperature. The mathematical model for the process is in the form of a system that consists of dynamic hyperbolic subdifferential inclusion for the mechanical state coupled with a nonlinear parabolic equation for the temperature and an elliptic equation for the electric potential. The paper establishes the existence of a weak solution to the problem by using time delays, a priori estimates and a convergence method.     

Is mortality or interest rate the most important risk in annuity models? A comparison of sensitivity analysis methods

Demographic and financial factors are key risk-drivers for insurance companies and pension funds. This paper proposes a systematic investigation for deepening our understanding how these risk drivers affect the annuity cost. We employ local and global sensitivity methods. For local sensitivity, we derive closed form expressions for the differential importance measures of perturbed annuities and connect them to the entropy of the annuity cost. For global sensitivity, we compare variance-based, moment-independent sensitivity measures and Shapley effects. In particular, moment-independent sensitivity measures and Shapley effects are compared for the first time in the case of dependent risk factors. Our framework encompasses and extends several previous results on the sensitivity analysis of annuity models. From a methodological viewpoint, the techniques compared in this paper can support analysts in building annuity models and in verifying the impact of risk drivers in their models. Numerical results using the U.S. 1990 and the U.K. 1990–1994 mortality tables show that the demographic factor is the most important risk source in low-interest rate contexts. However, when uncertainty on the two risk sources is taken into account, the financial factor becomes the global key-driver of risk. Also, interactions among the two factors appear quantitatively significant.

Self-adjoint realization of a class of third-order differential operators with an eigenparameter contained in the boundary conditions

The present paper deals with a class of third-order differential operators with eigenparameter dependent boundary conditions. Using operator theoretic formulation, the self-adjointness of this operator is proved, the properties of spectrum are investigated, its Green function and the resolvent operator are also obtained.

Spectral discretization of Darcy’s equations with pressure dependent porosity

We consider the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in a rigid homogeneous porous medium provided with boundary conditions on the pressure around a circular well. When the boundary pressure presents high variations, the permeability of the medium depends on the pressure, so that the model is nonlinear. We propose a spectral discretization of the resulting system of equations which takes into account the axisymmetry of the domain and of the flow. We prove optimal error estimates and present some numerical experiments which confirm the interest of the discretization.     

Stationary solutions for generalized boussinesq models

We study the existence, regularity and conditioas for uniqueness of solutions of a generalized Boussinesq model for thermally driven convection. The model allows temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity.     

Existence results for an impulsive neutral functional differential equation with state-dependent delay

In this article, we study the existence of mild solutions for a class of impulsive abstract partial neutral functional differential equations with state-dependent delay. The results are obtained by using Leray–Schauder Alternative fixed point theorem.
