Proximality and Chebyshev sets

This paper is a companion to a lecture given at the Prague Spring School in Analysis in April 2006. It highlights four distinct variational methods of proving that a finite dimensional Chebyshev set is convex and hopes to inspire renewed work on the open question of whether every Chebyshev set in Hilbert space is convex.     

Asymptotic Distribution of Nodes for Near-Optimal Polynomial Interpolation on Certain Curves in R 2

Let E\subset \Bbb R ^s be compact and let d _n ^E denote the dimension of the space of polynomials of degree at most n in s variables restricted to E . We introduce the notion of an asymptotic interpolation measure (AIM). Such a measure, if it exists , describes the asymptotic behavior of any scheme τ _n ={ \bf x _k,n } _k=1 ^dnE , n=1,2,\ldots , of nodes for multivariate polynomial interpolation for which the norms of the corresponding interpolation operators do not grow geometrically large with n . We demonstrate the existence of AIMs for the finite union of compact subsets of certain algebraic curves in R ² . It turns out that the theory of logarithmic potentials with external fields plays a useful role in the investigation. Furthermore, for the sets mentioned above, we give a computationally simple construction for ``good' interpolation schemes. November 9, 2000. Date revised: August 4, 2001. Corner spontaneous magnetization

Details are given of a new method allowing an exact calculation of the spontaneous magnetization in the corner as well as along the edge at an arbitrary distance of the corner for a rectangular planar Ising ferromagnet.     

Cyclic reduction and FACR methods for piecewise hermite bicubic orthogonal spline collocation

Cyclic reduction and Fourier analysis-cyclic reduction (FACR) methods are presented for the solution of the linear systems which arise when orthogonal spline collocation with piecewise Hermite bicubics is applied to boundary value problems for certain separable partial differential equations on a rectangle. On anN×N uniform partition, the cyclic reduction and Fourier analysis-cyclic reduction methods requireO(N ²log₂ N) andO(N ²log₂log₂ N) arithmetic operations, respectively.     

On the theory of vapor — Liquid — Crystal phase transitions

An approach is discussed which allows one to describe within the framework of the single model the aggregative states of a system of atoms obeying the Fermi statistics. A phase diagram is obtained containing both the critical point where the distinctions between the liquid and vapor vanish and the triple point where the liquid, vapor, and crystal are in equilibrium.     

Shape preservation regions for six-dimensional spaces

We analyze the critical length for design purposes of six-dimensional spaces invariant under translations and reflections containing the functions 1, cos t and sin t. These spaces also contain the first degree polynomials as well as trigonometric and/or hyperbolic functions. We identify the spaces whose critical length for design purposes is greater than 2π and find its maximum 4π. By a change of variables, two biparametric families of spaces arise. We call shape preservation region to the set of admissible parameters in order that the space has shape preserving representations for curves. We describe the shape preserving regions for both families. Change point estimation in non-monotonic aging models

The problem of estimating change points in various non-monotonic aging models is considered. A general methodology for consistent estimation of the change point is developed and applied to non-monotonic aging models based on the hazard rate function as well as on the mean residual life function.     

Lagrangian Duality in Set-Valued Optimization

In this paper, we study optimization problems where the objective function and the binding constraints are set-valued maps and the solutions are defined by means of set-relations among all the images sets (Kuroiwa, D. in Takahashi, W., Tanaka, T. (eds.) Nonlinear analysis and convex analysis, pp. 221–228, 1999). We introduce a new dual problem, establish some duality theorems and obtain a Lagrangian multiplier rule of nonlinear type under convexity assumptions. A necessary condition and a sufficient condition for the existence of saddle points are given. The authors thank the two referees for valuable comments and suggestions on early versions of the paper. Pairwise Correlations in a Multicomponent Anisotropic Liquid

We investigate a multicomponent anisotropic liquid system. The first spatial moment of the direct correlation function is taken into account to obtain asymptotic expressions for the pairwise correlation functions. In this approximation, we obtain the pairwise correlation functions that describe the system behavior not only in the critical-state neighborhood but also in the noncritical domain. We show that the critical parameters for the anisotropic system differ from those for the isotropic system.
