Structure of water-in-oil microemulsions of AOT by infrared spectroscopy

Summary The structure of water in water/AOT/n-heptane reverse micelles has been studied as a function of the [H₂O]/[AOT] ratio (W) by using the absorption IR due to O−H stretching modes in the 3800–3000 cm⁻¹ range. The results show that the IR spectra can be expressed as a sum of contributions from bound- and bulk-like water. The fraction of water in the two ?regions? within the water pool was evaluated as a function ofW. The ?bound? water region seems to hold 3.5 water molecules (corresponding to 7 O−H oscillators) per AOT molecule and its formation is nearly complete atW>6. Mean Spherical Approximation-Based Partitioned Density Functional Theory

Previous literature claims that the density functional theory for non-uniform non-hard sphere interaction potential fluid can be improved on by treating the tail part by the third order functional perturbation expansion approximation (FPEA) with the symmetrical and intuitive consideration-based simple function C0(3)(r1, r2, r3) =ζ∫ dr4a(r4 - r1)a(r4 - r2)a(r4 - r3) as the uniform third order direct correlation function (DCF) for the tail part,here kernel function a(r) = (6/πσ3)Heaviside(σ/2 - r). The present contribution concludes that for the mean spherical approximation-based second order DCF, the terms higher than second order in the FPEA of the tail part of the non-uniform first order DCF are exactly zero. The reason for the partial success of the previous a kernel function-based third order FPEA for the tail part is due to the adjustable parameter ζ and the short range of the a kernel function.Improvement over the previous theories is proposed and tested.

Mobility fluctuations and electrophoretic light scattering from macromolecular solutions

We discuss the origins and the effects of mobility fluctuations of rigid, globular macromolecules on a solution's electrophoretic light scattering spectrum. Assuming a dilute solution, a modified van Hove self-correlation function is calculated via van Kampen's time-ordered cumulant method and the results are compared with less rigorous approaches. The consequences of generalizing to dynamic external fields are briefly considered.     

Second-order risk comparison of SLSE with GLSE and MLE in a regression with serial correlation

First, the second-order bias of the estimator of the autoregressive parameter based on the ordinary least squares residuals in a linear model with serial correlation is given. Second, the second-order expansion of the risk matrix of a generalized least squares estimator with the above estimated parameter is obtained. This expansion is the same as that based on a suitable estimator of the autoregressive parameter independent of the sample. Third, it is shown that the risk matrix of the generalized least squares estimator is asymptotically equivalent to that of the maximum likelihood estimator up to the second order. Last, a sufficient condition is given for the term due to the estimation of the autoregressive parameter in this expansion to vanish under Grenander's condition for the explanatory variates.

Digital speckle correlation method with compensation technique for strain field measurements

In the strain field measurements, especially in large strain field measurements, the correlation coefficient values obtained by the digital speckle correlation method are usually very low due to the relative pixel movement of the subset. The measuring error, therefore, is increased. A primary method, that is called compensation algorithm, is introduced for improving the correlation coefficient. A flow scheme with the compensation algorithm of our software is developed and some improved techniques for reducing the calculation time and error are discussed in the paper. After obtaining a set of displacement data with high correlation coefficient, a de-noise wavelet processing is adopted. It is obvious that the measuring accuracy of the strain field is better then before. A strain field of testing experiment is performed with this compensation technique. The correlation coefficients can increase from 0.70 to 0.99, which will be of much benefit for the improvements of the measuring accuracy.
