Multiple solutions for the laminar flow in a porous pipe with suction at slowly expanding or contracting wall

In this paper, the asymptotic solution for the similarity equation of the laminar flow in a porous pipe with suction at expanding and contracting wall has been obtained using the singular perturbation method. However, this solution neglects exponentially small terms in the matching process. To take into account these exponentially small terms, a method involving the inclusion of exponentially small terms in a perturbation series was used to find the two solutions analytically. The series involving the exponentially small terms and expansion ratio predicts dual solutions. Furthermore, the result indicates that the expansion ratio has much important influence on the solutions. When the expansion ratio is zero, it is a special case that Terrill has discussed.     

Mutually orthogonal equitable Latin rectangles

Let ab=n². We define an equitable Latin rectangle as an a×b matrix on a set of n symbols where each symbol appears either or times in each row of the matrix and either or times in each column of the matrix. Two equitable Latin rectangles are orthogonal in the usual way. Denote a set of ka×b mutually orthogonal equitable Latin rectangles as a k– MOELR (a,b;n). When a≠9,18,36, or 100, then we show that the maximum number of k– MOELR (a,b;n)≥3 for all possible values of (a,b).     

凸域内矩形的运动测度

本文研究了凸域内矩形的运动测度,通过对凸域内定长线段运动测度的推广,建立了包含在凸域内且长、宽都确定的矩形运动测度的一般公式,利用此公式得到了圆域和矩形域内此类矩形的运动测度,并以此为基础得到了推广后的Buffon投针问题的一些结果.     

Blow-up for Joseph–Egri equation: Theoretical approach and numerical analysis

This work develops the theory of the blow-up phenomena for Joseph–Egri equation. The existence of the nonextendable solution of two initial-boundary value problems (on a segment and a half-line) is demonstrated. Sufficient conditions of the finite-time blow-up of these solutions, as well as the analytical estimates of the blow-up time, are obtained. A numerical method that allows to precise the blow-up moment for specified initial data is proposed.     

Coinvasion–coexistence travelling wave solutions of an integro-difference competition system

This paper is concerned with the travelling wave solutions of an integro-difference competition system, of which the purpose is to model the coinvasion–coexistence process of two competitors with age structure. The existence of non-trivial travelling wave solutions is obtained by constructing generalized upper and lower solutions. The asymptotic and non-existence of travelling wave solutions are proved by combining the theory of asymptotic spreading with the idea of contracting rectangle.     

Salesforce contracting under model uncertainty

This paper considers a firm's salesforce contracting problem under model uncertainty. Based on the notion of multiplier preferences, we capture model uncertainty and explicitly characterize the structure of the optimal contract. Our findings provide guidelines on the design of salesforce compensation contracts in practical situations.     

Introduction to integral calculus at high school through calculating area and volume with spreadsheets

This paper gives an account of an experiment in which 33 high school students of age 16–19 acquired the principles of the integral calculus through applying the rectangle method in spreadsheet to calculate the area of a planar figure bounded by the graph of a function and the volume of a body created by the rotation of the graph. A questionnaire survey was carried out to find out whether the students found the lesson interesting, contributing to their mathematical and technological knowledge and motivating to continue with more complicated tasks.
