Binary operations on Jordan algebras and orthogonal normal models

Jordan algebras are used to present normal orthogonal models in a canonical form. Binary operations are defined on these algebras, which enable us to build complex models based on simpler ones. Properties of these operations and their relation with balanced models are studied.The canonical model formulation is interesting because it leads to complete sufficient statistics. These statistics are then used to obtain estimators in order to test hypothesis on the model parameters.

Simplification of Space-Variant Parallel Logic Operations Using the Temporal Method

A time-domain encoding method (temporal method) for space-variant parallel logic operations, which can execute different operations in parallel, is proposed. The temporal method is based on temporal encoding of two input patterns, temporal gating of the coded pattern, and decoding by temporal addition of the gated patterns. The first feature of the proposed method is that parallel logic operations can be performed without complex pattern transformations. The second feature is that the logical output can be directly fed to succeeding systems without specific decoding. Therefore, the logic operation system can be constructed using conventional optics and existing spatial light modulators. In order to confirm these features, an optoelectronic experimental system is constructed and space-variant parallel logic operations are performed.     

模拟函数法测定重力加速度

模拟函数法测重力加速度是针对传统的重力加速度测定中没有考虑空气阻力影响而采用的一种新型方法。本文采用此法测定了当地的重力加速度，得到了较满意的效果。     

The Effects of Polarization and Non-Linearity on the Performance of WDM System with Optical Cross-Connects

The performance of a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system with optical cross-connects (OXCs) and in the presence of polarization and nonlinear effects was analyzed. We determined the effect of PMD and PDL; nonlinearity such as XPM, SPM, and FWM; and CD on the system performance. We found that the system outage probability is highest at DGD threshold for the respective maximum eye closure (EC). We showed that the allowable DGD depends on the time slot for one bit T, which is the inverse of the network bit rate. Wider T is more immune to large PMD with the EC still maintained at the same level since DGD/T is unchanged. Our analysis also indicated that as DGD increases, BER increases. The BER also increases with increase in PDL and further increases with the presence of XPM, SPM, FWM, and CD.     

Optical and continuous-wave characteristics of V-grooved quantum well wire lasers confined by a p-n junction array

Role of the side-wall quantum wells in a V-grooved quantum well wire (QWW) is briefly reviewed by temperature-dependent photoluminescence, and then continuous-wave (cw) characteristics of QWW lasers confined by a p-n junction array are reported. In terms of the effectiveness in current confinement, very high power operation (over 11 mW) and a single longitudinal mode operation up to 8mW are achieved. Room-temperature threshold currents are measured to be 32.5 mA (pulsed) and 47.8 mA (cw) for a 200 m long uncoated cavity. The current- and temperature-tuning rates of the oscillation wavelength are as low as 0.038 nm/mA and 0.17 nm/°C, respectively.
