Equilibrium Problems with Applications to Eigenvalue Problems

In this paper, we consider equilibrium problems and introduce the concept of (S)₊ condition for bifunctions. Existence results for equilibrium problems with the (S)₊ condition are derived. As special cases, we obtain several existence results for the generalized nonlinear variational inequality studied by Ding and Tarafdar (Ref. 1) and the generalized variational inequality studied by Cubiotti and Yao (Ref. 2). Finally, applications to a class of eigenvalue problems are given.     

Measure of Ordering in Statistical Systems

In this paper, we introduce a phenomenological measure of ordering in statistical systems. Using this characteristic, we construct a formal model of a system evolving according to the law of steepest ascent as the control parameter increases.     

On Poisson–Malcev Structures

Malcev–Poisson structure on a manifold is analogous to a Poisson structure with the Lie identity replaced by a slightly more general Malcev identity. Examples of such structures arise naturally. In the second part of the paper we study Malcev bialgebras. A theorem of characterization is proved.     

The Lattice of Deductive Systems on Hilbert Algebras

The concept of deductive system on a Hilbert algebra was introduced by A. Diego. We show that the set Ded A of all deductive systems on a Hilbert algebra A forms an algebraic lattice which is distributive.AMS Classification (2000): 06F35, 03G25, 08A30     

An Application of Branch and Cut to Open Pit Mine Scheduling

The economic viability of the modern day mine is highly dependent upon careful planning and management. Declining trends in average ore grades, increasing mining costs and environmental considerations will ensure that this situation will remain in the foreseeable future. The operation and management of a large open pit mine having a life of several years is an enormous and complex task. Though a number of optimization techniques have been successfully applied to resolve some important problems, the problem of determining an optimal production schedule over the life of the deposit is still very much unresolved. In this paper we will critically examine the techniques that are being used in the mining industry for production scheduling indicating their limitations. In addition, we present a mixed integer linear programming model for the scheduling problems along with a Branch and Cut solution strategy. Computational results for practical sized problems are discussed.     

Computation of Almost Split Sequences with Applications to Relatively Projective and Prinjective Modules

Let be an Artin algebra, let mod be the category of finitely generated -modules, and let Amod be a contravariantly finite and extension closed subcategory. For an indecomposable and not Ext-projective module CA, we compute the almost split sequence 0ABC0 in A from the almost split sequence 0DTrCEC0 in mod. Since the computation is particularly simple if the minimal right A-approximation of DTrC is indecomposable for all indecomposable and not Ext-projective CA, we manufacture subcategories A with the desired property using orthogonal subcategories. The method of orthogonal subcategories is applied to compute almost split sequences for relatively projective and prinjective modules.     

Asymptotic Expansion of the Distribution Density Function for the Sum of Random Variables in the Series Scheme in Large Deviation Zones

The work is designated for obtaining asymptotic expansions and determination of structures of the remainder terms that take into consideration large deviations both in the Cramer zone and Linnik power zones for the distribution density function of sums of independent random variables in a triangular array scheme. The result was obtained using general Lemma 6.1 of Saulis and Statuleviius in Limit Theorems for Large Deviations (Kluwer, 1991) and joining the methods of characteristic functions and cumulants. The work extends the theory of sums of random variables and in a special case, improves S. A.Book's results on sums of random variables with weights.     

When is a Quasi-p-injective Module Continuous?

It is well-known that every quasi-p-injective module has C2-condition. In this note, it is shown that for a quasi-p-injective module M which is a self-generator, if M is projective, duo and semiperfect, then M is continuous. As a special case we re-obtain a result of Puninski-Wisbauer-Yousif saying that, a semiperfect ring R is right continuous if it is right duo, right p-injective.AMS Subject Classifications (1991): 16D50, 16D70, 16D80Supported by The Royal Golden Jubilee Project     

Symmetry of the Barochronous Motions of a Gas

We study the system of nonlinear differential equations which expresses the constancy of the algebraic invariants of the Jacobian matrix for smooth vector fields in three-dimensional space. This system is equivalent to the equations of gas dynamics which describe the barochronous motions of a gas (the pressure and density depend only on the time). We present the results of computation of the admissible local Lie group and construction of the general solution of the system. We mention a few new problems that arise here.     

On Fučik Spectra and Periodic Solutions

In this paper, we continue extending the theory of boundary-value problems to ordinary differential equations and inclusions with discontinuous right-hand side. To this end, we construct a new version of the method of shifts along trajectories. We compare the results obtained by the new approach and those obtained by the method of Fuik spectra.
