Mechanical and Thermal Properties Enhancement of Poly(Lactic Acid)/Halloysite Nanocomposites by Maleic-Anhydride Functionalized Rubber

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/halloysite composites were prepared using melt compounding followed by compression molding. Maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS-g-MAH) was used to toughen the PLA composites. The mechanical properties of the PLA composites were studied through tensile, flexural, and impact tests. The thermal properties were characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The fracture surfaces of the composites were assessed by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The impact strength and thermal properties of the PLA/halloysite composites were increased by addition of SEBS-g-MAH.     

Globally Convergent Broyden-Like Methods for Semismooth Equations and Applications to VIP, NCP and MCP

In this paper, we propose a general smoothing Broyden-like quasi-Newton method for solving a class of nonsmooth equations. Under appropriate conditions, the proposed method converges to a solution of the equation globally and superlinearly. In particular, the proposed method provides the possibility of developing a quasi-Newton method that enjoys superlinear convergence even if strict complementarity fails to hold. We pay particular attention to semismooth equations arising from nonlinear complementarity problems, mixed complementarity problems and variational inequality problems. We show that under certain conditions, the related methods based on the perturbed Fischer–Burmeister function, Chen–Harker–Kanzow–Smale smoothing function and the Gabriel–Moré class of smoothing functions converge globally and superlinearly.     

On the iterative solution of the algebraic equations in fully implicit Runge-Kutta methods

This paper deals with the iterative solution of stage equations which arise when some fully implicit Runge-Kutta methods, in particular those based on Gauss, Radau and Lobatto points, are applied to stiff ordinary differential equations. The error behaviour in the iterates generated by Newton-type and, particularly, by single-Newton schemes which are proposed for the solution of stage equations is studied. We consider stiff systems y'(t) = f(t,y(t)) which are dissipative with respect to a scalar product and satisfy a condition on the relative variation of the Jacobian of f(t,y) with respect to y, similar to the condition considered by van Dorsselaer and Spijker in [7] and [17]. We prove new convergence results for the single-Newton iteration and derive estimates of the iteration error that are independent of the stiffness. Finally, some numerical experiments which confirm the theoretical results are presented. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Oscillations of higher order differential equations of neutral type

In this paper, sufficient conditions have been obtained for oscillation of solutions of a class of nth order linear neutral delay-differential equations. Some of these results have been used to study oscillatory behaviour of solutions of a class of boundary value problems for neutral hyperbolic partial differential equations.     

Recurrence relations for the coefficients of the Fourier series expansions with respect to q-classical orthogonal polynomials

We propose an algorithm to construct recurrence relations for the coefficients of the Fourier series expansions with respect to the q-classical orthogonal polynomials p_k(x;q). Examples dealing with inversion problems, connection between any two sequences of q-classical polynomials, linearization of ϑ_m(x) p_n(x;q), where ϑ_m(x) is x^mor (x;q)_m, and the expansion of the Hahn-Exton q-Bessel function in the little q-Jacobi polynomials are discussed in detail. Symmetry analysis of initial-value problems

Symmetry analysis is a powerful tool that enables the user to construct exact solutions of a given differential equation in a fairly systematic way. For this reason, the Lie point symmetry groups of most well-known differential equations have been catalogued. It is widely believed that the set of symmetries of an initial-value problem (or boundary-value problem) is a subset of the set of symmetries of the differential equation. The current paper demonstrates that this is untrue; indeed, an initial-value problem may have no symmetries in common with the underlying differential equation. The paper also introduces a constructive method for obtaining symmetries of a particular class of initial-value problems.     

On well-posedness for some dispersive perturbations of Burgers' equation

We show that the Cauchy problem for a class of dispersive perturbations of Burgers' equations containing the low dispersion Benjamin–Ono equation

is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ when $s>s_{\alpha }:=\frac{3}{2}?\frac{5\alpha }{4}$. As a consequence, we obtain global well-posedness in the energy space $H^{\frac{\alpha }{2}}(\mathbb{R})$ as soon as $\frac{\alpha }{2}>s_{\alpha }$, i.e. $\alpha >\frac{6}{7}$.
