On the boundary value problem for the spectrally loaded heat conduction operator

We consider the boundary value problems in a quarter-plane for a loaded heat conduction operator (one-dimensional in the space variable). A peculiarity of the operator in question is as follows: first, the spectral parameter is the coefficient of the loaded summand; second, the order of the derivative in the loaded summand is equal to that of the differential part of the operator, and third, the load point moves with a variable velocity. We demonstrate that the boundary value problem under study is Noetherian.     

Transverse disks, symbolic dynamics, homology direction vectors, and Thurston-Nielson theory

We review some properties of transverse disks and use symbolic dynamics to determine rotation vectors from the return map to a transverse disk. We also prove connections between the symbolic dynamics and Nielson equivalence of orbits.

Rook Poset Equivalence of Ferrers Boards

A natural construction due to K. Ding yields Schubert varieties from Ferrers boards. The poset structure of the Schubert cells in these varieties is equal to the poset of maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board under the Bruhat order. We determine when two Ferrers boards have isomorphic rook posets. Equivalently, we give an exact categorization of when two Ding Schubert varieties have identical Schubert cell structures. This also produces a complete classification of isomorphism types of lower intervals of 312-avoiding permutations in the Bruhat order.     

A posteriori pointwise error estimation for compressible fluid flows using adjoint parameters and Lagrange remainder

The pointwise error of a finite‐difference calculation of supersonic flow is discussed. The local truncation error is determined by a Taylor series with the remainder being in a Lagrange form. The contribution of the local truncation error to the total pointwise approximation error is estimated via adjoint parameters. It is demonstrated by numerical tests that the results of the numerical calculation of gasdynamics parameter at an observation point may be refined and an error bound may be estimated. The results of numerical tests for the case of parabolized Navier–Stokes are presented as an illustration of the proposed method. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Exact Controllability and Boundary Stabilization of Torsional Vibrations of an Internally Damped Flexible Space Structure

In this paper, we study the exact controllability and boundary stabilization of the torsional vibrations of a flexible space structure (such as a solar cell array) modeled by a rectangular panel, incorporating the material damping of the structure. The panel is hoisted at one end by a rigid hub and the other end is totally free. For the attachment of this hub on one side of the panel, the hub dynamics leads to a nonstandard boundary condition. To incorporate internal damping of the material, we assume Voigt-type viscoelasticity of the structure. Exact controllability theory is established using the Hilbert uniqueness method by means of a control torque applied only on the rigid hub of the panel. At the same time, uniform exponential energy decay rate is obtained directly for the solution of this problem.
