Addition of secondary phosphines to a vinyl ether of diacetone-d-glucose: a new approach to optically active phosphines and their derivatives

Secondary phosphines react readily with a vinyl ether of diacetone-d-glucose under radical initiation conditions to give, in high yield, anti-Markovnikov adducts, diorganyl{2-[3-O-(1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene)-d-glucofuranosyloxy]ethyl}phosphines, which oxidize almost quantitatively upon reacting with air oxygen or elemental sulfur to form the corresponding optically active phosphine oxides or sulfides.     

9H-Fluorene-9-carbodithioic acids and dithioates. First isolation and characterization of a gem-enedithiol

[2,7-Bis(octyloxy)fluoren-9-yliden]methanedithiol (1a) and its tautomer 2,7-bis(octyloxy)-9H-fluorene-9-carbodithioic acid (2a) can be isolated in pure form from the reaction of monolithiated 2,7-bis(octyloxy)-9H-fluorene with CS₂ followed by protonolysis with aqueous HCl. Compound 1a is the first isolated and unambiguously characterized gem-enedithiol. When 9H-fluorene, 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9H-fluorene or 2,7-dimethoxy-9H-fluorene are used, the same synthetic procedure yields the unstable dithioic acids, which can be converted to the piperidinium salts.     

Synthesis of optically active ring-A substituted tryptophans as IDO inhibitors

The first synthesis of optically active 7-methoxy-d-tryptophan as well as other ring-A substituted tryptophans is described.     

Optimal Control Problem Associated with Jump Processes

An optimal portfolio/control problem is considered for a two-dimen\-sional model in finance. A pair consisting of the wealth process and cumulutative consumption process driven by a geometric Lévy process is controlled by adapted processes. The value function appears and turns out to be a viscosity solution to some integro-differential equation, by using the Bellman principle.     

Stabilization and H{infty} control of two-dimensional Markovian jump systems

This paper extends the results obtained for one-dimensionalMarkovian jump systems, to investigate the problems of stochasticstabilization and H control of two-dimensional (2D) systemswith Markovian jump parameters. The mathematical model of 2Djump systems is established upon the well-known Roesser model,and sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence ofdesired controllers in terms of linear matrix inequalities,which can be readily solved by available numerical software.These obtained results are further extended to more generalcases whose system matrices also contain parameter uncertaintiesrepresented by either polytopic or norm-bounded approaches.A numerical example is provided to show the applicability ofthe proposed theories.

First-Order Necessary Conditions of Optimality for Strongly Monotone Nonlinear Control Problems

Necessary conditions for the optimality of a pair (y*, u*) with respect to the cost functional g(y) + h(u) subject to AyBu + f are given in terms of generalized gradients. Here, g is locally Lipschitz, h is convex, A is a maximal strongly monotone operator, and B is linear. Two examples of applications of our necessary conditions to nonlinear partial differential equations of elliptic type are presented.     

Statistical Measures for Ordinary Least Squares Using the αQ Algorithm

This paper shows how the dynamic program algorithm called the Q algorithm can be used as an alternative algorithm to produce the coefficients of a least squares problem. It shows also how the output of the algorithm can be used to calculate various statistical quantities needed to evaluate linear models. In particular, we show how to calculate standard statistical quantities like the coefficient of determination R², the t statistics, and the F statistics. These quantities serve as a measure of how well the model fits the data.     

Higher-Order Convex Approximations of Young Measures in Optimal Control

The general theory of approximation of (possibly generalized) Young measures is presented, and concrete cases are investigated. An adjoint-operator approach, combined with quasi-interpolation of test integrands, is systematically used. Applicability is demonstrated on an optimal control problem for an elliptic system, together with one-dimensional illustrative calculations of various options.
