We prove that any simply connected -manifold of CR-codimension s 2 is noncompact by showing that the complete, simply connected -manifolds are all the CR products N × {s-1} with N Sasakian, endowed with a suitable product metric. N is a Sasakian -symmetric space if and only if M is CR-symmetric. The locally CR-symmetric -manifolds are characterized by

The problem of how mathematics and physics are related at a foundational level is of interest. The approach taken here is to work towards a coherent theory of physics and mathematics together by examining the theory experiment connection. The role of an implied theory hierarchy and use of computers in comparing theory and experiment is described. The main idea of the paper is to tighten the theory experiment connection by bringing physical theories, as mathematical structures over C, the complex numbers, closer to what is actually done in experimental measurements and computations. The method replaces C by Cn which is the set of pairs, Rn,In, of n figure rational numbers in some basis. The properties of these numbers are based on those of numerical measurement outcomes for continuous variables. A model of space and time based on Rn is discussed. The model is scale invariant with regions of constant step size interrupted by exponential jumps. A method of taking the limit n→∞ to obtain locally flat continuum-based space and time is outlined. Also Rn based space is invariant under scale transformations. These correspond to expansion and contraction of space relative to a flat background. The location of the origin, which is a space and time singularity, does not change under these transformations. Some properties of quantum mechanics, based on Cn and on Rn space are briefly investigated.  相似文献

When does a continuous map have chaotic dynamics in a set ? More specifically, when does it factor over a shift on symbols? This paper is an attempt to clarify some of the issues when there is no hyperbolicity assumed. We find that the key is to define a ``crossing number' for that set . If that number is and 1$">, then contains a compact invariant set which factors over a shift on symbols.

For polynomial splines as well as for Chebyshev splines, it is known that total positivity of the connection matrices is sufficient to obtain B-spline bases. In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of B-bases (or, equivalently, of blossoms) for splines with connection matrices and with sections in different four-dimensional extended Chebyshev spaces.  相似文献

Two rough plates with multiple contacts of diverse microgeometries are pressed against one another. Two types of contacts can be distinguished: Hertzian ones and “welded” areas. We find that for circular contacts (1) the two types produce the same effect on the incremental stiffness of the interface and on the effective conductivity across it if their contact areas are the same; (2) for both contact types, the compliance and the conductivity are controlled by the same microstructural parameter, where Sk is the kth contact area; (3) the explicit cross-property connection is established that gives the (incremental) stiffness in terms of the conductivity; it holds for an arbitrary mixture of Hertzian and welded contacts and does not require any knowledge of their microgeometries. Whereas the two types of contacts produce the same effect on the incremental stiffness, the Hertzian contacts cause non-linearities (the incremental stiffness increases with loading). The non-linearity is controlled by the microstructural parameter that is sensitive to contrasts of curvatures of the contacting parts. Model predictions are generally in good agreement with experimental data on conductivities of rough metal surfaces and stiffnesses of rough rock surfaces.  相似文献
