Experiments were conducted in a water flume using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to study the evolution of the vortical structures in the wakes of four types of screen cylinders at a Reynolds number of about 3200. The results were compared with that of a bare cylinder. The screen cylinders were made of stainless steel screen meshes of various porosities (37%, 48%, 61% and 67%) rolled into cylindrical shapes. Smoke wire flow visualisations in a wind tunnel were also conducted in support of the PIV tests. Depending on the porosity of the screen mesh, two vortex formation mechanisms for the screen cylinder wakes were identified. One was associated with wake instability and the other was associated with shear-layer (Kelvin-Helmholtz) convective instability which involved merging through pairing and tripling of small-scale vortices within the shear layers. The former was responsible for the formation of large-scale vortices in the bare cylinder and the screen cylinder wakes with 37% and 48% porosities, while the latter was responsible for the screen cylinder wakes with 61% and 67% porosities. The results also showed that with increasing porosity, the vortex formation region was extended farther downstream and the Reynolds shear stress, the Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) and vortex intensity were decreased constantly. 相似文献

We consider the mass-imbalanced sensibility for the emergence of vortex patterns in the Bose-Einstein condensed binary mixture of rubidium-cesium (85Rb-133Cs), confined in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic traps, with one species linearly perturbed in one direction. Non-dipolar coupled species are chosen to highlight mass symmetry effects. We first analyze the condensed mixture in the unperturbed non-rotating regime, where radial phase separation is verified in the immiscible regime, which occurs for large ratio between inter- and intra-species repulsive interactions. By going to the linear perturbed regime, the radial phase separation that occurs in the immiscible condition splits up with the two densities having their maxima at distinct positions. In the rotating regime of both unperturbed and perturbed cases, the minimum rotation is determined in terms of the inter-species interaction to observe vortex structures. In the immiscible regime a dramatic spatial interchange between the species is verified by increasing the rotation. 相似文献

As shown by Crow in 1970, the evolution of two almost parallel vortex filaments with opposite circulation exhibits a long-wave instability. Ultimately, the symmetric mode increases its amplitude reconnecting both filaments and ending into the formation of an almost periodic structure of vortex rings. This is a universal process, which appears in a wide range of scales: from the vortex trails behind an airplane to a microscopic scale of superfluids and Bose–Einstein condensates. In this paper, I will focus on the vortex reconnection for the latter case by employing Gross–Pitaevskii theory. Essentially, I focus on the well-known laws of interaction and motion of vortex filaments. By means of numerical simulations, as well as theoretically, I show that a self-similar finite-time dynamics manifests near the reconnection time. At low temperatures a lateral photoconductivity (PC) of Ge/Si (1 0 0) self-organized quantum rings (QRs) structures as a function of interband light intensity has been investigated for different values of lateral voltage and temperature. In contrast to self-organized Ge/Si quantum dots (QDs) structures (grown at the same conditions) where the stepped PC was registered, for QRs structures essential smoothing of PC steps was observed. Such behavior is determined by decreasing of strain potential around QRs in conductive Si matrix due to a transfer of Ge atoms from the center of QDs to its periphery accompanied by Ge/Si intermixing. 相似文献
