Numerical simulations of systems of PDEs by variational iteration method

In this Letter, a general framework of the variational iteration method (VIM) is presented for solving systems of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). In VIM, a correction functional is constructed by a general Lagrange's multiplier which can be identified via a variational theory. VIM yields an approximate solution in the form of a rapid convergent series. Comparison with the exact solutions shows that VIM is a powerful method for the solution of linear and nonlinear systems of PDEs.     

Soliton switching and propagation in two-core nonlinear fiber coupler with high order coupling coefficient

We use the variational approach (VA) and the split-step Fourier transforms (SSFT) to study the transmission and switching characteristics inside the fiber nonlinear directional coupler (NDLC). The results, based on the VA, indicate that the second-order coupling coefficient dispersion and initiative chirp all reduce the coupling length, and the second-order coupling coefficient dispersion makes the switching characteristics become sharper and threshold power become bigger under the case of not having initiative chirp. The outcomes, based on the SSFT, indicate that the first order intermodal dispersion coefficient make optical pulses splitting in the propagation of fundamental solitons, and the second-order coupling coefficient dispersion reduces the coupling length, sharpens the switching characteristics and increases the switching threshold power, the results agrees well with those from the VA.     

Variational principles for two kinds of extended Korteweg—de Vries equations

Variational principles are constructed using the semi-inverse method for two kinds of extended Korteweg—de Vries (KdV) equations, which can be regarded as simple models of the nonlinear oceanic internal waves and atmospheric long waves, respectively. The obtained variational principles have also been proved to be correct.     

Calculus of sequential normal compactness in variational analysis

In this paper we study some properties of sets, set-valued mappings, and extended-real-valued functions unified under the name of “sequential normal compactness.” These properties automatically hold in finite-dimensional spaces, while they play a major role in infinite-dimensional variational analysis. In particular, they are essential for calculus rules involving generalized differential constructions, for stability and metric regularity results and their broad applications, for necessary optimality conditions in constrained optimization and optimal control, etc. This paper contains principal results ensuring the preservation of sequential normal compactness properties under various operations over sets, set-valued mappings, and functions.

On the embedding of variational inequalities

This work is devoted to the approximation of variational inequalities with pseudo-monotone operators. A variational inequality, considered in an arbitrary real Banach space, is first embedded into a reflexive Banach space by means of linear continuous mappings. Then a strongly convergent approximation procedure is designed by regularizing the embedded variational inequality. Some special cases have also been discussed.

Informational acquisition and cognitive models

Life forms must organize information into cognitive models reflecting the outside environment, and in a complex and changing environment a life form must constantly select and organize this mass of information to avoid slipping into a chaotic cognitive state. The task of developing and maintaining adaptive cognitive models can be understood through two processes, crucial to regulating the interconnections between environmental elements. The inclusion and exclusion of information follows a process designated by P and the process by which cognitive models change is designated by K. A nonsmooth Newton method for variational inequalities,I: Theory

This paper presents a modified damped Newton algorithm for solving variational inequality problems based on formulating this problem as a system of equations using the Minty map. The proposed modified damped-Newton method insures convergence and locally quadratic convergence under the assumption of regularity. Under the assumption ofweak regularity and some mild conditions, the modified algorithm is shown to always create a descent direction and converge to the solution. Hence, this new algorithm is often suitable for many applications where regularity does not hold. Part II of this paper presents the results of extensive computational testing of this new method.Corresponding author.
