Lower closure and existence theorems for optimal control problems with infinite horizon

Lower closure theorems are proved for optimal control problems governed by ordinary differential equations for which the interval of definition may be unbounded. One theorem assumes that Cesari's property (Q) holds. Two theorems are proved which do not require property (Q), but assume either a generalized Lipschitz condition or a bound on the controls in an appropriateL _p-space. An example shows that these hypotheses can hold without property (Q) holding.     

Nonconical optimality conditions: Some additional results

The purpose of the present note is to provide a somewhat more flexible statement of the sufficiency conditions in Section 4 of Ref. 1 and to give explicit statements of the fundamental necessity and sufficiency results, which were only implicitly presented there. The additional flexibility is obtained by considering local, rather than global, pseudoconcavity requirements.     

Central limit theorem and weak law of large numbers with rates for martingales in Banach spaces

This paper is concerned with large-$\text{O}$ error estimates concerning convergence in distribution as well as norm convergence for Banach space-valued martingale difference sequences. Indeed, two general limit theorems equipped with rates of convergence for such difference sequences are established. Applications of these lead to the central limit theorem and the weak law of large numbers with rates for Banach space-valued martingales.     

Existence of Entire Solutions of a Singular Semilinear Elliptic Problem

In this paper, we obtain some existence results for a class of singular semilinear elliptic problems where we improve some earlier results of Zhijun Zhang. We show the existence of entire positive solutions without the monotonic condition imposed in Zhang‘s paper. The main point of our technique is to choose an approximating sequence and prove its convergence. The desired compactness can be obtained by the Sobolev embedding theorems.     

Regularity estimates for solutions of the equations of linear elasticity in convex plane polygonal domains

The Dirichlet problem for the plane elasticity problem on a convex polygonal domain is considered and it is proved that for data in L ² the H ² regularity estimate holds with constants independent of the Lamé coefficients.     

On nonoscillatory solutions of differential inclusions

This paper introduces a nonoscillatory theory for differential inclusions based on fixed point theory for multivalued maps.

     

Ergodic-theoretic properties of certain Bernoulli convolutions

The aim of this paper is to prove some fixed point theorems which generalize well known basic fixed point principles of nonlinear functional analysis. Moreover, we investigate the class of mappings f: X→ X, where X is a Banach space, for which one of the main conditions in the metric fixed point theory, namely the condition (1), is satisfied. We obtain essential applications of this fact. All our results are illustrated by suitable examples. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

The Central Approximation Theorems for the Method of Left Gamma Quasi-Interpolants in L p spaces

The optimal degree of approximation of the method of Gammaoperators G _n in L _p spaces is O(n ^-1). In order to obtain much faster convergence, quasi-interpolants G _n ^(k) of G _n in the sense of Sablonnière are considered. We show that for fixed k the operator-norms G _n ^(k) _p are uniformly bounded in n. In addition to this, for the first time in the theory of quasi-interpolants, all central problems for approximation methods (direct theorem, inverse theorem, equivalence theorem) could be solved completely for the L _p metric. Left Gamma quasi-interpolants turn out to be as powerful as linear combinations of Gammaoperators [6].     

Entire solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in and a conjecture of De Giorgi

In 1978 De Giorgi formulated the following conjecture. Let be a solution of in all of such that and 0$"> in . Is it true that all level sets of are hyperplanes, at least if ? Equivalently, does depend only on one variable? When , this conjecture was proved in 1997 by N. Ghoussoub and C. Gui. In the present paper we prove it for . The question, however, remains open for . The results for and 3 apply also to the equation for a large class of nonlinearities .

     

Boyle temperature and cubic equations of state

The sensitivity of Boyle temperature to changes in parameters appearing in cubic equations of state and to volume shift is analyzed. Analytical expressions for the Boyle temperature and for the dependency to the shift of the equation of state are given for the most common cases of the alpha function.
