High-density properties of hard spheres within a modified Percus-Yevick theory: The role of thermodynamic consistency

Using an integral-equation approach based upon an approximation for the tail function, the equilibrium properties of a system of hard spheres are studied with special concern for the behavior in the region of close packing. The closure adopted is such that full, internal consistency is ensured in the thermodynamics of the model with respect to both the two zero-separation theorems as well as to the more standard virial and fluctuation routes to the equation of state. The scheme also makes use of the continuity properties of the tail function and of the cavity distribution function at contact. These properties are explictly tested in the low-density limit up to the fourth derivative. The theory generates an equilibrium branch bounded on the high-density side by a point corresponding to a packing fraction0.78, a value which closely matches Rogers' least upper bound for the densest packing of spheres. The pair structure of the fluid in the state of random close packing is also compared to the type of local order predicted by the theory at similar densities.     

Convexlike and concavelike conditions in alternative,minimax, and minimization theorems

Convexlike and concavelike conditions are of interest for extensions of the Von Neumann minimax theorem. Since the beginning of the 80's, these conditions also play a certain role in deriving generalized alternative theorems of the Gordan, Motzkin, and Farkas type and Lagrange multiplier results for constrained minimization problems.In this paper, we study various known convexlike conditions for vector-valued functions on a set and investigate convexlike and concavelike conditions for real-valued functions on a product setC×D, where we are mainly interested in the relationships between these conditions. At the end of the paper, we point out several conclusions from our results for the above-mentioned mathematical fields.The author is indebted to Dr. R. Reemtsen and Dr. V. The asymptotic equivalence of Bayes and maximum likelihood estimation

This theorem improves results of Bickel and Yahav [3], and Ibragimov and Has'minskii [4], as far as the speed of convergence is concerned.     

Wavelet expansions and asymptotic behavior of distributions

We develop a distribution wavelet expansion theory for the space of highly time-frequency localized test functions over the real line S₀(R)⊂S(R) and its dual space , namely, the quotient of the space of tempered distributions modulo polynomials. We prove that the wavelet expansions of tempered distributions converge in . A characterization of boundedness and convergence in is obtained in terms of wavelet coefficients. Our results are then applied to study local and non-local asymptotic properties of Schwartz distributions via wavelet expansions. We provide Abelian and Tauberian type results relating the asymptotic behavior of tempered distributions with the asymptotics of wavelet coefficients.     

On the optimal control for variational inequalities

We prove an existence theorem for the optimal control of variational inequalities governed by a pseudomonotone operator: the cost is assumed to be quadratic. Then, we give an extension of the theorem to more general costs (assuming the operator to be monotone); we also give a result on a perturbation problem.This work is an extended part of the author's thesis, written under the direction of Professor T. Zolezzi. This research was partially supported by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), Rome, Italy.     

Remarks on lower semicontinuity and lower closure

In the context of a recent geometric condition of Cesari, used in the reduction of seminormality requirements in lower closure theorems, this paper shows that the existence of a strongly convergent selection from the sequence of orientor fields, under Kuratowski property (K), is adequate to guarantee lower closure theorems. This generalization is justified through examples. Connections between Romanovski and other polynomials

A connection between Romanovski polynomials and those polynomials that solve the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with the trigonometric Rosen-Morse and hyperbolic Scarf potential is established. The map is constructed by reworking the Rodrigues formula in an elementary and natural way. The generating function is summed in closed form from which recursion relations and addition theorems follow. Relations to some classical polynomials are also given.     

Vector sampling expansions in shift invariant subspaces

Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) sampling scheme which is motivated by applications in multi-channel deconvolution and multi-source separation has been investigated in many aspects. Common for most of results on MIMO systems is that the input signals are supposed to be band-limited. In this paper, we study vector sampling expansions on general finitely generated shift-invariant subspaces. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a vector sampling theorem to hold are given. We also give several examples to illustrate the main result.     

On Cesari's property (Q)

In the present paper, we generalize, within the family of convex-valued multifunctions, a selection theorem of Cole (Ref. 1). This then leads us to prove some new results concerning Cesari's property (Q) and to the introduction of the Cesari limit of sets, which is then compared to the Kuratowski-Mosco limit.This work was done while the author was a visiting professor at the University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy.
