L1-optimal estimates for a regression type function in R

Let X₁, X₂, …, X_n be random vectors that take values in a compact set in R^d, d ≥ 1. Let Y₁, Y₂, …, Y_n be random variables (“the responses”) which conditionally on X₁ = x₁, …, X_n = x_n are independent with densities f(y | x_i, θ(x_i)), i = 1, …, n. Assuming that θ lives in a sup-norm compact space Θ_q,d of real valued functions, an optimal L₁-consistent estimator of θ is constructed via empirical measures. The rate of convergence of the estimator to the true parameter θ depends on Kolmogorov's entropy of Θ_q,d.     

Preparation of dye-loaded SiO2 nanoparticles

A room temperature method for the encapsulation of pyrene in SiO₂ nanoparticles is described. The relation between alkoxysilane surfactant chain length, reactant molar ratios and the uptake of dye, sample morphology, photophysical properties, and the ability of the silicate matrix to protect the encapsulated dye was examined. The synthesis can easily be adapted for the encapsulation of other hydrophobic and thermolabile substances, and used in the development of nanostructured optically active coatings, films and monoliths.     

The Two-Point Codes with the Designed Distance on a Hermitian Curve in Even Characteristic

In Homma M and Kim SJ [2], the authors considered two-point codes on a Hermitian curve defined over fields of odd characteristic. In this paper, we study the geometry of a Hermitian curve over fields of even characteristic and classify the two-point codes whose minimum distances agree with the designed ones.     

商标数据库存储模式及其检索算法研究

依据商标专家的先验知识和基于内容的图像检索技术，提出了一种新的商标库存储结构，并依据该存储结构设计了以三级检索算法为核心的实用商标登记注册管理系统，对于检索算法，一级检索采用人工确认，二级检索采用傅立叶描述子作为边缘特征向量，三级检索采用hu不变矩组作为矩特征向量，从而达到提高商标申请注册中的检索速度和查准率。     

The application of Hölder exponent to traffic congestion warning

In this paper, we applied multifractal modeling techniques to analyze the traffic data collected from the Beijing Yuquanying. The results indicated that multifractal characteristics obviously exist in the traffic system; the degree of fractality of these traffic data tends to increase as the traffic system becomes congested; the Hölder exponent that measures the local rate of fractality may be used as indicators to predict the presence of the traffic congestion.     

Entropic criterion for model selection

Model or variable selection is usually achieved through ranking models according to the increasing order of preference. One of methods is applying Kullback–Leibler distance or relative entropy as a selection criterion. Yet that will raise two questions, why use this criterion and are there any other criteria. Besides, conventional approaches require a reference prior, which is usually difficult to get. Following the logic of inductive inference proposed by Caticha [Relative entropy and inductive inference, in: G. Erickson, Y. Zhai (Eds.), Bayesian Inference and Maximum Entropy Methods in Science and Engineering, AIP Conference Proceedings, vol. 707, 2004 (available from arXiv.org/abs/physics/0311093)], we show relative entropy to be a unique criterion, which requires no prior information and can be applied to different fields. We examine this criterion by considering a physical problem, simple fluids, and results are promising.

In a general measure-theoretic context, it is proved that the action of a stochastic map on a pair of probability distributions can be characterized by the criterion of decreasing mixing distance.     

A new quantum statistical evaluation method for time correlation functions

Considering a system ofN identical interacting particles, which obey Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein statistics, we derive new formulas for correlation functions of the type (whereB _j is diagonal in the free-particle states) in the thermodynamic limit. Thereby we apply and extend a superoperator formalism, recently developed for the derivation of long-time tails in semiclassical systems. As an illustrative application, the Boltzmann equation value of the time-integrated correlation functionC(t) is derived in a straightforward manner. Due to exchange effects, the obtained t-matrix and the resulting scattering cross section, which occurs in the Boltzmann collision operator, are now functionals of the Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein distribution.
