Prefiltration technique via aggregation for constructing low‐density high‐quality factorized sparse approximate inverse preconditionings

This paper considers a new approach to a priori sparsification of the sparsity pattern of the factorized approximate inverses (FSAI) preconditioner using the so‐called vector aggregation technique. The suggested approach consists in construction of the FSAI preconditioner to the aggregated matrix with a prescribed sparsity pattern. Then small entries of the computed ‘aggregated’ FSAI preconditioning matrix are dropped, and the resulting pointwise sparsity pattern is used to construct the low‐density block sparsity pattern of the FSAI preconditioning matrix to the original matrix. This approach allows to minimize (sometimes significantly) the construction costs of low‐density high‐quality FSAI preconditioners. Applying a Mode Selector to Improve the Pulse-Compression Performance of Asymmetric-Coupled-Waveguide-Based Dispersion Compensators

An InGaAsP slab-type asymmetric-coupled-waveguide-based dispersion compensator with a mode selector has been designed and fabricated. The mode selector is necessary to select either a symmetric [with a positive group-velocity dispersion (GVD)] or antisymmetric (with a negative GVD) supermode. These supermodes exist simultaneously in the dispersion-compensation region of the device. Pulse-compression experiments were used to test the dispersion compensator, evaluating the function of the mode selector. A theoretical study of the experimental results shows that the mode selector obtains a very strong selectivity (nearly 100%) for the antisymmetric supermode.     

SOME SUBGROUPS OF THE EXTENDED HECKE GROUPS (λ_q)

The authors consider the extended Hecke groups H(λq) generated by T(z) = -1 / z, S(z) = -1/(z + λq,) and R(z) = 1 / z with A, = 2 cos(π/q) for q≥3 an integer. In this paper, the even subgroup He(λq), the second commutator subgroup H (λq) and the principal congruence subgroups Hp(λq) of the extended Hecke groups H(λq) are studied. Also, relations between them are given.     

Surfaces of revolution in the Heisenberg group and the spectral generalization of the Willmore functional

We study the generalization of the Willmore functional for surfaces in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group. Its construction is based on the spectral theory of the Dirac operator entering into theWeierstrass representation of surfaces in this group. Using the surfaces of revolution we demonstrate that the generalization resembles the Willmore functional for the surfaces in the Euclidean space in many geometrical aspects. We also observe the relation of these functionals to the isoperimetric problem.     

The spectrum of BSA(v, 3, λ; α) with α = 2,3

In this article, a kind of auxiliary design BSA^* for constructing BSAs is introduced and studied. Two powerful recursive constructions on BSAs from 3‐IGDDs and BSA^*s are exploited. Finally, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a BSA(v, 3, λ; α) with α = 2, 3 are established. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs 15: 61–76, 2007     

On the Patterson–Sullivan Measure for Geometrically Finite Groups Acting on Complex or Quaternionic Hyperbolic Space

The goal of this paper is to provide a tool, the Global Measure Formula, that will facilitate the study of the limit set of discrete geometrically finite groups of isometries of the rank one symmetric spaces. We consider the shadow of a ball from a fixed reference point onto the boundary, and prove a formula that describes the measure of the shadow in terms of the center of the shadowed ball, generalizing a result from real hyperbolic geometry.     

On a free group of transformations defined by an automaton

We prove that three automorphisms of the rooted binary tree defined by a certain 3-state automaton generate a free non-Abelian group of rank 3. Both authors are supported by the NSF grants DMS-0308985 and DMS-0456185. Yaroslav Vorobets is supported by a Clay Research Scholarship.     

Monoidal functors on the category of representations of a triangular Hopf algebra

Let (H,R) be a triangular Hopf algebra. The monoidal functors on the category of representations ofH is studied, and a universal quantum commutative algebraSeR(M) and a dual H°-comoduleM° for any H-moduleM with an integrale are constructed.
