Asymptotic Correction of More Sturm–Liouville Eigenvalue Estimates

The asymptotic correction technique of Paine, de Hoog and Anderssen can dramatically improve the accuracy of finite difference or finite element eigenvalues at negligible extra cost if closed form expressions are available for the errors in a simpler related problem. This paper gives closed form expressions for the errors in the eigenvalues of certain Sturm–Liouville problems obtained by various methods, thereby increasing the range of problems for which asymptotic correction can achieve maximum efficiency. It also investigates implementation of the method for more general problems.     

Amine‐blocked polyisocyanates. I. Synthesis of novel N‐methylaniline‐blocked polyisocyanates and deblocking studies using hot‐stage fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

A series of substituted N‐methylaniline‐blocked polyisocyanates based on 4,4′‐methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) and poly(tetrahydrofuran) were prepared and characterized thoroughly with FTIR, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy methods. Compared with unsubstituted N‐methylaniline, a blocking agent with an electron‐releasing substituent at the para position took a shorter time, whereas those with an electron‐releasing substituent at the ortho position or an electron‐withdrawing substituent at the ortho and para positions took longer times for the blocking reaction. The thermal dissociation reactions of blocked polyisocyanates were carried out with an FTIR spectrophotometer attached to hot‐stage accessories under dynamic and isothermal conditions. The dynamic method was used to determine the deblocking temperature, and the isothermal method was used to calculate the deblocking kinetics and activation parameters. The cure times of blocked polyisocyanates with hydroxyl‐terminated polybutadiene were also determined. The deblocking temperatures, the results of cure‐time studies, and the kinetic parameters revealed that the thermal dissociation of the N‐methylaniline‐blocked polyisocyanates was retarded by electron‐donating substituents and facilitated by electron‐withdrawing substituents. The action of N‐methylanilines as blocking agents for isocyanate was explained by the formation of a four‐center, intramolecularly hydrogen‐bonded ring structure during the thermal dissociation of the blocked polyisocyanates. The formation of such a hydrogen‐bonded ring structure was confirmed and supported by variable‐temperature ¹H NMR studies and entropy parameters, respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. On the Stability of Bifurcation Diagrams of Vanishing Flattening Points

On a smooth surface in Euclidean 3-space, we consider vanishing curves whose projections on a given plane are small circles centered at the origin. The bifurcations diagram of a parameter-dependent surface is the set of parameters and radii of the circles corresponding to curves with degenerate flattening points. Solving a problem due to Arnold, we find a normal form of the first nontrivial example of a flattening bifurcation diagram, which contains one continuous invariant.

Time-marching numerical schemes for the electric field integral equation on a straight thin wire

We derive and analyse four algorithms for computing the current induced on a thin straight wire by a transient electric field. They all involve solving the thin wire electric field integral equations (EFIEs) and consist of a very accurate differential equations solver together with various schemes to approximate the vector potential integral equation. We carry out a rigorous numerical stability analysis of each of these methods. This has not previously been done for solution schemes for the thin wire EFIEs. Each scheme is shown to be stable and convergent provided the radius of the wire is small enough for the thin wire equations to be a valid model.

Banach空间值鞅不等式与弱大数定律

本文证明了Ｂａｎａｃｈ空间值鞅的一些不等式，讨论了Ｂａｎａｃｈ空间的凸性及光滑性与某些鞅不等的式的联系，给出了Ｈｉｌｂｅｒｔ空间的一个鞅不等式刻划，同时还讨论了一致Ｐ光滑空间中鞅的弱大数定律，本文的结论推广与改进了很多熟知的定理。     

Problems, Models and Complexity. Part II: Application to the DLSP

In Part I of this study, we suggest to identify an operations research (OR) problem with the equivalence class of models describing the problem and enhance the standard computer-science theory of computational complexity to be applicable to this situation of an often model-based OR context. The Discrete Lot-sizing and Scheduling Problem (DLSP) is analysed here in detail to demonstrate the difficulties which can arise if these aspects are neglected and to illustrate the new theoretical concept. In addition, a new minimal model is introduced for the DLSP which makes this problem eventually amenable to a rigorous analysis of its computational complexity.     

Some remarks on the Jensen-Hadamard inequalities and applications

We provide some inequalities and integral inequalities connected to the Jensen-Hadamard inequalities for convex functions. In particular, we give some refinements to these inequalities. Some natural applications and further extensions are given.
