Euler characteristic and related measures for random geometric sets

By an elementary calculation we obtain the exact mean values of Minkowksi functionals for a standard model of percolating sets. In particular, a recurrence theorem for the mean Euler characteristic recently put forward is shown to be incorrect. Related previous mathematical work is mentioned. We also conjecture bounds for the threshold density of continuum percolation, which are associated with the Euler characteristic.     

Numerical analysis of the Toda lattice equations

Numerical solutions to three systems of integrable evolutionary equations from the Toda lattice hierarchy are analyzed. These are the classical Toda lattice, the second local dispersive flow, and the second extended dispersive flow. Special attention is given to the properties of soliton solutions. For the equations of the second local flow, two types of solitons interacting in a special manner are found. Solutions corresponding to various initial data are qualitatively outlined.     

Evaluation formulas for Tornheim's type of alternating double series

In this paper, we give some evaluation formulas for Tornheim's type of alternating series by an elementary and combinatorial calculation of the uniformly convergent series. Indeed, we list several formulas for them by means of Riemann's zeta values at positive integers.

     

An implicit characteristic-flux-averaging method for the euler equations for real gases

A formulation of an implicit characteristic-flux-averaging method for the unsteady Euler equations with real gas effects is presented. Incorporation of a real gas into a general equation of state is achieved by considering the pressure as a function of density and specific internal energy. The Ricmann solver as well as the flux-split algorithm are modified by introducing the pressure derivatives with respect to density and internal energy. Expressions for calculating the values of the flow variables for a real gas at the cell faces are derived. The Jacobian matrices and the eigenvectors are defined for a general equation of state. The solution of the system of equations is obtained by using a mesh-sequencing method for acceleration of the convergence. Finally, a test case for a simple form of equation of state displays the differences from the corresponding solution for an ideal gas.     

Modified Kirchhoff flow with a partially penetrable obstacle and its application to the efficiency of free flow turbines

An explicitly solvable analog of the Kirchhoff flow for the case of a semipenetrable obstacle is considered. Its application to estimating the efficiency of free flow turbines is discussed.     

Molecular flow and wall collision age distributions

The use of storage cells has become a standard technique for internal gas targets in conjunction with high energy storage rings. In case of spin-polarized hydrogen and deuterium gas targets the interaction of the injected atoms with the walls of the storage cell can lead to depolarization and recombination. Thus the number of wall collisions of the atoms in the target gas is important for modeling the processes of spin relaxation and recombination. It is shown in this article that the diffusion process of rarefied gases in long tubes or storage cells can be described with the help of the one-dimensional diffusion equation. Mathematical methods are presented that allow one to calculate collision age distributions (CAD) and their moments analytically. These methods provide a better understanding of the different aspects of diffusion than Monte Carlo calculations. Additionally it is shown that measurements of the atomic density or polarization of a gas sample taken from the center of the tube allow one to determine the possible range of the corresponding density weighted average values along the tube. The calculations are applied to the storage cell geometry of the HERMES internal polarized hydrogen and deuterium gas target. Received 9 July 2001 and Received in final form 18 September 2001

A proof of Howard’s conjecture in homogeneous parallel shear flows

A rigorous mathematical proof of Howard's conjecture which states that the growth rate of an arbitrary unstable wave must approach zero, as the wave length decreases to zero, in the linear instability of nonviscous homogeneous parallel shear flows, is presented here for the first time under the restriction of the boundedness of the second derivative of the basic velocity field with respect to the vertical coordinate in the concerned flow domain.     

Riabouchinsky flow with partially penetrable obstacle

An explicitly solvable Riabouchinsky model with a partially penetrable obstacle is introduced. This model applied to the estimation of the efficiency of free flow turbines allows us to take into account the pressure drop past the lamina.
