Cyclic cohomology and algebra extensions

We construct a spectral sequence to study cyclic cohomology for an extension A = R/I of algebras. When R is a free algebra we describe the cyclic cohomology of A in terms of traces defined on R or powers of I. Explicit cyclic cocycles representing the cyclic cohomology class belonging to the trace are constructed as analogues of Chern character and Chern-Simons forms.Dedicated to Alexander Grothendieck     

Relativistic field formulation of simultaneous quantum measurement

The simultaneous measurement of Dirac field operators is formulated in analogy to the work of von Neumann and Arthurs-Kelly. Meter fields are coupled to the system field with a relativistically invariant bilinear interaction. Measurement of vacuum meter field expectation values provides for the simultaneous measurement of noncommuting system components. It is shown that two meter coupling allows for a simultaneous minimum in the variance of the subsequent meter measurements. A pseudoscalar self-interaction of the Dirac field is shown to allow simultaneous measurement of positive energy field operators with negative energy meters. The simultaneous measurement ofn noncommuting field operators is obtained by coupling the system ton fermionic fields. Also, in this paper the related concept of mutual simultaneous measurement is developed. This requires that any operators in the enlarged Hilbert space are measurable by the remaining fields as meters. System embedding into a larger Hilbert space results in added noise due to the zero point motion of the meter fields. By the negentropy principle of Brillouin, the added noise is equivalent to entropy. A criterion determining the interaction among fields is that the averaged added noise in the components of each quantum field is minimized. This criterion defines an optimum fermionic mass matrix through the determination of the entangling interaction.1. Extension closure of k-torsionfree modules

Let Λ be a left and right Noetherian ring. For a positive integer k, we give an equivalent condition that flat dimensions of the first k terms in the minimal injective resolution of Λ are less than or equal to k. In this case we show that the subcategory consisting of k-torsionfree modules is extension closed. Moreover we prove that for a Noetherian algebra every subcategory consisting of i-torsionfree modules is extension closed for any 1 ≤ i ≤ k if and only if every subcategory consisting of i-th syzygy modules is extension closed for any 1 ≤ i ≤ k. Our results generalize the main results in Auslander and Reiten [4].

Equivalence after extension and Schur coupling coincide for inessential operators

In recent years the coincidence of the operator relations equivalence after extension (EAE) and Schur coupling (SC) was settled for the Hilbert space case. For Banach space operators, it is known that SC implies EAE, but the converse implication is only known for special classes of operators, such as Fredholm operators with index zero and operators that can in norm be approximated by invertible operators. In this paper we prove that the implication EAE $?$ SC also holds for inessential Banach space operators. The inessential operators were introduced as a generalization of the compact operators, and include, besides the compact operators, also the strictly singular and strictly co-singular operators; in fact they form the largest ideal such that the invertible elements in the associated quotient algebra coincide with (the equivalence classes of) the Fredholm operators.     

Continuous approximation of linear impulsive systems and a new form of robust stability

The time-scale tolerance for linear ordinary impulsive differential equations is introduced. How large the time-scale tolerance is directly reflects the degree to which the qualitative dynamics of the linear impulsive system can be affected by replacing the impulse effect with a continuous (as opposed to discontinuous, impulsive) perturbation, producing what is known as an impulse extension equation. Theoretical properties related to the existence of the time-scale tolerance are given for periodic systems, as are algorithms to compute them. Some methods are presented for general, aperiodic systems. Additionally, sufficient conditions for the convergence of solutions of impulse extension equations to the solutions of their associated impulsive differential equation are proven. Counterexamples are provided.
