Characterization of the Cone and Applications in Banach Spaces

Abstract

In this article, we first discuss the subduality and orthogonality of the cones and the dual cones when the norm is monotone in Banach spaces. Then, under different assumptions, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ordering increasing property of the metric projection onto cones and order intervals are studied. Moreover, representations of the metric projection onto cones and order intervals are obtained. As applications, the solvability and approximation results of solutions to nonlinear discontinuous variational inequality and complementarity problems are proved by partial ordering methods.     

On a Class of Random Variational Inequalities on Random Sets

We study a class of random variational inequalities on random sets and give measurability, existence, and uniqueness results in a Hilbert space setting. In the special case where the random and the deterministic variables are separated, we present a discretization technique based on averaging and truncation, prove a Mosco convergence result for the feasible random set, and establish norm convergence of the approximation procedure.     

Newton's Method for Underdetermined Systems of Equations Under the γ-Condition

The convergence criterion of Newton's method for underdetermined system of equations under the γ-condition is established and the radius of the convergence ball is obtained. Applications to analytic operator are provided and some results due to Shub and Smale (SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 1996, 33:128–148) are extended and improved.     

Finite Time Extinction by Nonlinear Damping for the Schrödinger Equation

We consider the Schrödinger equation on a compact manifold, in the presence of a nonlinear damping term, which is homogeneous and sublinear. For initial data in the energy space, we construct a weak solution, defined for all positive time, which is shown to be unique. In the one-dimensional case, we show that it becomes zero in finite time. In the two and three-dimensional cases, we prove the same result under the assumption of extra regularity on the initial datum.     

On the Existence of Solutions for Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations Under Relaxed Convexity Assumptions

We establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic second-order equations like H(v, Dv, D ² v, x) = 0 in smooth domains without requiring H to be convex or concave with respect to the second-order derivatives. Apart from ellipticity nothing is required of H at points at which |D ² v| ≤K, where K is any given constant. For large |D ² v| some kind of relaxed convexity assumption with respect to D ² v mixed with a VMO condition with respect to x are still imposed. The solutions are sought in Sobolev classes.     

Local Regularity for Parabolic Nonlocal Operators

Weak solutions to parabolic integro-differential operators of order α ∈ (α₀, 2) are studied. Local a priori estimates of Hölder norms and a weak Harnack inequality are proved. These results are robust with respect to α↗2. In this sense, the presentation is an extension of Moser's result from [20 Moser , J. ( 1971 ). Sharp Lp estimates for the ∂bequation on the boundaries of real ellipsoids in Cn

In this paper we prove the best possible L^p estimates for the ?-_b -equation on the boundaries of real ellipsoids in Cⁿ, and provide examples to show why they cannot be improved.     

Application of Full Quivers of Representations of Algebras,to Polynomial Identities

In [7 Belov , A. , Rowen , L. H. , Vishne , U. Full quivers of representations of algebras. To appear in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.  [Google Scholar]] we introduced the notion of full quivers of representations of algebras, which are more explicit than quivers of algebras, and better suited for algebras over finite fields. Here, we consider full quivers as a combinatorial tool in order to describe PI-varieties of algebras. We apply the theory to clarify the proofs of diverse topics in the literature: Determining which relatively free algebras are weakly Noetherian, determining when relatively free algebras are finitely presented, presenting a quick proof for the rationality of the Hilbert series of a relatively free PI-algebra, and explaining counterexamples to Specht's conjecture for varieties of Lie algebras.
