Vessel Arrival Process and Queueing in Marine Ports Handling Bulk Materials

We study the vessel arrival process in bulk ports handling either cargo containers or minerals. Then we introduce the SHIP/G/1 queue to be able to study the queueing behavior at the port. We present approximations for the asymptotic probabilities of delay and the number of vessels at the port. Numerical examples show the accuracy of the approximations. In appendices, we provide details of the analysis of the number of vessels at the port and the correlation properties of the vessel arrival process.     

On the concept of point value in the infinite-dimensional realization theory

In this article, we study the effect of the chosen representation of a point value (and point evaluation) on the class of periodic signals realizable using a certain type of infinite-dimensional linear system. By suitably representing the point evaluation at the origin in a Hilbert space, we are able to give a complete characterization of its extensions. These extensions involve a new concept called δ-sequence, the use of which as an observation operator of an infinite-dimensional linear system is studied in this article. In particular, we consider their use in the realization of periodic signals. We also investigate how the use of δ-sequences affects the convergence properties of such realizations; we consider the rate and character of convergence and the removal of the Gibbs phenomenon. As still a further demonstration of the significance of the chosen concept of a point value, we discuss the use of distributional point values in the realization of periodic distributions. The possible applications of this work lie in regulator problems of infinite-dimensional control theory, as is indicated by the well-known internal model principle.     

Structural characterization of nanopatterned surfaces

In this work, chemically and topographically nanopatterned surfaces were produced by a top-down processing approach for biosensing devices. The nanopatterning was the result of the combination of plasma polymerisation (pp) of biofunctional materials and colloidal lithography techniques. The morphological and chemical properties induced by the plasma deposition-etching treatment were characterised by optical method combining ellipsometry and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy studies. This method supported by atomic force microscopy measurements, allowed the full optical characterization of each step of the top-down process. The optical characterization of the end-up nanopatterned samples demonstrated that the chosen process is able to produce well-defined nanostructured surfaces with controlled chemical and morphological properties.     

On the effect of a longitudinal magnetic field on oscillatory characteristics of a subnormal region in discharge in argon

Oscillating nature of current pulses under d.c. excitation in subnormal region with longitudinal magnetic field at pressure range 0.20 torr to 0.85 torr have been studied. The frequency, bandwidth, peak-peak voltage, cut-off current and rise time of the current pulses have been observed with pressure, average tube current and magnetic field. A study of these oscillograms in magnetic field, average tube current and pressure are presented. The probable mechanism for the generation of oscillation based on space-charge field modification with magnetic field is discussed     

SINGLE MACHINE SCHEDULING WITH CONTROLLABLE PROCESSING TIMES AND COMPRESSION COSTS （PART I：EQUAL TIMES AND COSTS）

Most papers in scheduling research have treated individual job processing times as fixed parameters. However, in many practical situations, a manager may control processing time by realloeating resources. In this paper, authors consider a machine scheduling problemwith controllable processing times. In the first part of this paper, a special case where the pro-cessing times and compression costs are uniform among jobs is discussed. Theoretical results are derived that aid in developing an O（n^2) algorithm to slove the problem optimally. In the second part of this paper, authors generalize the discussion to general case, An effective heuristic to the genera/ problem will be presented.     

灰色模型的最优化及其参数的直接求法

基于灰色模型的内涵表达式和白化方程响应式均为等比级数的观点,提出了一种不用求ago值、均值,不涉及灰色微分方程,白化微分方程概念,直接求灰色模型参数a,c的方法,通过此方法建立的新模型不仅从理论上可保证是在满足给定评价标准为模拟绝对误差平方和最小(或模拟相对误差平方和最小)、给定精度条件下的最优化模型,从而结束了灰色模型只有更优,没有最优的历史.并从理论上证明了新模型具有白化指数律重合性、白化系数律重合性,伸缩变换一致性.最后通过实例编程验证该方法具有可操作性,且预测精度高,效果好.     

Numerical analysis of a model of cure process for composites

We consider a composite material composed of fibres included in a resin which becomes solid when it is heated up (reaction of reticulation). The mathematical modelling of the cure process is given by a kinetic equation describing the evolution of the reaction of reticulation coupled with the heat equation. In this paper, we are interested in the computation of approximate solutions. We propose a family of discretized problems depending on two parameters (β₁, β₂) ε [0, 1]² which split the linear and non‐ linear terms in implicit and explicit parts. We prove the stability and convergence of the discretization for any (β₁, β₂) ε [½, 1 ] × [0, 1]. We present also some numerical results. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

EXISTENCE OF GLOBAL SMOOTH SOLUTION FOR SCALAR CONSERVATION LAWS WITH DEGENERATE VISCOSITY IN 2-DIMENSIONAL SPACE

This article concerns the existence of global smooth solution for scalar conservation laws with degenerate viscosity in 2-dimensional space. The analysis is based on successive approximation and maximum principle.     

RELAXATION TIME LIMITS PROBLEM FOR HYDRODYNAMIC MODELS IN SEMICONDUCTOR SCIENCE

In this article, two relaxation time limits, namely, the momentum relaxation time limit and the energy relaxation time limit are considered. By the compactness argument, it is obtained that the smooth solutions of the multidimensional nonisentropic Euler-Poisson problem converge to the solutions of an energy transport model or a drift diffusion model, respectively, with respect to different time scales.     

THE LARGE TIME BEHAVIOR OF SPECTRAL APPROXIMATION FOR A CLASS OF PSEUDOPARABOLIC VISCOUS DIFFUSION EQUATION

The asymptotic behavior of the solutions to a class of pseudoparabolic viscous diffusion equation with periodic initial condition is studied by using the spectral method. The semidiscrete Fourier approximate solution of the problem is constructed and the error estiation between spectral approximate solution and exact solution on large time is also obtained. The existence of the approximate attractor AN and the upper semicontinuity d(AN,A)→0 are proved.
