On the connection between harmonic maps and the self-dual Yang—Mills and the sine-Gordon equations

This is an algebraic paper which demonstrates some algebraic connections between the Yang—Mills and the sine-Gordon equation.     

New Type of Generalized Vector Quasiequilibrium Problem

In this paper, we introduce a new type of vector quasiequilibrium problem with set-valued mappings and moving cones. By using the scalarization method and fixed-point theorem, we obtain its existence theorem. As applications, we derive some existence theorems for vector variational inequalities and vector complementarity problems. An iterative method for generalized set-valued nonlinear mixed quasi-variational inequalities

This paper presents an iterative method for solving the generalized nonlinear set-valued mixed quasi-variational inequality, a problem class that was introduced by Huang et al. (Comp. Math. Appl. 40 (2–3) (2000) 205–215). The method incorporates step size controls that enable application to problems where certain set-valued mappings do not always map to nonempty closed bounded sets.     

Seven kinds of monotone maps

Known as well as new types of monotone and generalized monotone maps are considered. For gradient maps, these generalized monotonicity properties can be related to generalized convexity properties of the underlying function. In this way, pure first-order characterizations of various types of generalized convex functions are obtained.     

Uniqueness and stability of slowly oscillating periodic solutions of delay equations with bounded nonlinearity

We study slowly oscillating periodic solutions of delay equations with small parameters. When the nonlinearity has finite and nonzero limits at infinities, the appearance of these solutions and their periods can be found though asymptotic analysis. Under further natural assumptions on the nonlinearity, we prove that slowly oscillating periodic solutions are unique and asymptotically stable when parameters are sufficiently small.     

Spatial chaos in boundary layer transition

Experiments have been performed on a laminar flat plate boundary layer undergoing transition to turbulence. Reproducible disturbances were introduced via a loudspeaker embedded at some upstream location and their evolution over the plate measured using hot-wire anemometry. A new technique has been used to estimate the number of nonlinearly independent modes in the reconstructed phase portraits. Nonlinear maps were then fitted that explicitly model the spatial evolution of disturbances. These maps are consistent with classical linear stability theory for small disturbances, and give rise to Smale horse-shoe like behaviour for larger amplitude distrubances. Thus a mechanism for generating chaos has been uncovered.     

Perturbation methods for nonlinear autonomous discrete-time dynamical systems

Two perturbation methods for nonlinear autonomous discrete-time dynamical systems are presented. They generalize the classical Lindstedt-Poincaré and multiple scale perturbation methods that are valid for continuous-time systems. The Lindstedt-Poincaré method allows determination of the periodic or almost-periodic orbits of the nonlinear system (limit cycles), while the multiple scale method also permits analysis of the transient state and the stability of the limit cycles. An application to the discrete Van der Pol equation is also presented, for which the asymptotic solution is shown to be in excellent agreement with the exact (numerical) solution. It is demonstrated that, when the sampling step tends to zero the asymptotic transient and steady-state discrete-time solutions correctly tend to the asymptotic continuous-time solutions.

Approximate solutions and scalarization in set-valued optimization

Abstract

Certain notions of approximate weak efficient solutions are considered for a set-valued optimization problem based on vector and set criteria approaches. For approximate solutions based on the vector approach, a characterization is provided in terms of an extended Gerstewitz’s function. For the set approach case, two notions of approximate weak efficient solutions are introduced using a lower and an upper quasi order relations for sets and further compactness and stability aspects are discussed for these approximate solutions. Existence and scalarization using a generalized Gerstewitz’s function are also established for approximate solutions, based on the lower set order relation.     

Characterization of derivations on B(X) by local actions

Let A be a unital algebra and M be a unital A-bimodule. A linear map δ : A →M is said to be Jordan derivable at a nontrivial idempotent P ∈ A if δ(A) ? B + A ? δ(B) =δ(A ? B) for any A, B ∈ A with A ? B = P, here A ? B = AB + BA is the usual Jordan product. In this article, we show that if A = Alg N is a Hilbert space nest algebra and M = B(H), or A = M = B(X), then, a linear map δ : A → M is Jordan derivable at a nontrivial projection P ∈ N or an arbitrary but fixed nontrivial idempotent P ∈ B(X) if and only if it is a derivation. New equivalent characterization of derivations on these operator algebras was obtained.
