Holomorphic Curves and Toda Systems.

The geometry of holomorphic curves from the point of view of open Toda systems is discussed. Parametrization of curves related in this way to nonexceptional simple Lie algebras is given. This gives rise to explicit formulas for minimal surfaces in real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces or complex quadrics. The Letter generalizes the well-known connection between minimal surfaces in E3, their Weierstrass representation in terms of holomorphic functions, and the general solution to the Liouville equation.Mathematics Subject Classifications (1991):35Q58, 58E20, 22E46.     

Decay of correlations in one and two dimensions

An exposition of some methods of proving exponential (stretched exponential) decay of correlations is given. One-dimensional strictly hyperbolic and quadratic maps and two-dimensional piecewise smooth, uniformly hyperbolic maps are considered. The emphasis is on the fundamental constructions of the Markov sieve method due to Bunimovich-Chernov-Sinai and those of Liverani's Hilbert metric method.     

Metrizability and Coconnectedness

Solving the problem stated in Sichler and Trnková, Topol. Its Appl., 142: 159–179, 2004, we construct metrics μ, ν on a set P such that the spaces X=(P,μ) and Y=(P,ν) have the same monoid of all continuous selfmaps, the space Y is coconnected (in the sense that every continuous map Y×Y→Y depends on at most one coordinate) while X is not. Also, properties of the forgetful functors Metr → Unif → Top are investigated for the “simultaneous variant” of the above problem. Iterative solution of nonlinear equations of accretive and pseudocontractive types

Let E be a real uniformly smooth Banach space. Let A:D(A)=E→2E be an accretive operator that satisfies the range condition and A⁻¹(0)≠∅. Let {λ_n} and {θ_n} be two real sequences satisfying appropriate conditions, and for z∈E arbitrary, let the sequence {x_n} be generated from arbitrary x₀∈E by x_n+1=x_n−λ_n(u_n+θ_n(x_n−z)), u_n∈Ax_n, n?0. Assume that {u_n} is bounded. It is proved that {x_n} converges strongly to some x∗∈A−1(0). Furthermore, if K is a nonempty closed convex subset of E and T:K→K is a bounded continuous pseudocontractive map with F(T):={Tx=x}≠∅, it is proved that for arbitrary z∈K, the sequence {x_n} generated from x₀∈K by x_n+1=x_n−λ_n((I−T)x_n+θ_n(x_n−z)), n?0, where {λ_n} and {θ_n} are real sequences satisfying appropriate conditions, converges strongly to a fixed point of T.     

Set-valued increasing-along-rays maps and well-posed set-valued star-shaped optimization

In this paper we introduce a class of set-valued increasing-along-rays maps and present some properties of set-valued increasing-along-rays maps. We show that the increasing-along-rays property of a set-valued map is close related to the corresponding set-valued star-shaped optimization. By means of increasing-along-rays property, we investigate stability and well-posedness of set-valued star-shaped optimization.     

Deterministic chaos in one-dimensional maps—the period doubling and intermittency routes

This paper is a review of the present status of studies relating to occurrence of deterministic chaos and its characterization in one-dimensional maps. As our primary aim is to introduce the nonspecialists into this fascinating world of chaos we start from very elementary concepts and give sufficient arguments for clarity of ideas. The two main scenarios during onset of chaos viz. the period doubling and intermittency are dealt with in detail. Although the logistic map is often discussed by way of illustration, a few more interesting maps are mentioned towards the end.     

Connectedness of efficient solution sets for set-valued maps in normed spaces

In vector optimization, the topological properties of the set of efficient solutions are of interest. Several authors have studied this topic for point-valued functions. In this paper, we study the connectedness of the efficient solution sets in convex vector optimization for set-valued maps in normed spaces.The author would like to thank Professor W. T. About contingent epiderivatives

In this paper we analyze some questions concerning the contingent epiderivative. When the ordering cone is not necessarily pointed we introduce the notion of family of contingent epiderivatives. We also investigate the relationship between the contingent derivative and the generalized epiderivative. Furthermore, we give existence theorems with respect to Daniell cones. As a particular case, we study set-valued maps that take values in Rn.
