Ecological systems are complex assemblages of various species with interactions between them. The interactions can be even more important than the species themselves for understanding how the whole system is functioning and organized. For the representation of the topological space of interspecific relationships, graph theory is a suitable mathematical tool: the network perspective and the various techniques of network analysis are more and more elaborated and invading ecology. Beyond a static view on networks, fundamental questions can only be answered if dynamical analyses are also made, and now it is clear that structural and dynamical studies must not “compete” but strongly complement each other. Our aim is to give a menu of classical and more recently suggested network indices and to discuss what do we know about their relations to ecosystem dynamics. Since ecologists have very diverse problems, they need diverse techniques and a good insight in matching the adequate method to a particular problem. The main question is how to link certain graph properties to understanding and predicting the behaviour of an ecosystem. A new and simple method for fabrication of nanofiber scaffolds with gradations in fiber organization is reported. The nanofiber organization, achieved by deposition of random fibers on the uniaxially aligned nanofiber mat in a gradient manner, directed morphological changes of applied adipose‐derived stem cells. These morphological changes and resultant biochemical changes can help mimic the structural orientation of complex biomechanical structures like the collagen fiber structure at the tendon‐to‐bone insertion site. In addition, chemical gradients can be established through nanoencapsulation in this novel scaffold allowing for enhanced biomedical applications.

Cells of Voronoi diagrams in two dimensions are usually considered as having edges of zero width. However, this is not the case in several experimental situations in which the thickness of the edges of the cells is relatively large. The elementary cellular automaton following rule 184 can mimic particles flowing in one direction at a constant speed. Therefore, this automaton can model highway traffic qualitatively. In a recent paper, we have incorporated intersections regulated by traffic lights to this model using exclusively elementary cellular automata. In such a paper, however, we only explored a rectangular grid. We now extend our model to more complex scenarios using an hexagonal grid. This extension shows first that our model can readily incorporate multiple‐way intersections and hence simulate complex scenarios. In addition, the current extension allows us to study and evaluate the behavior of two different kinds of traffic‐light controller for a grid of six‐way streets allowing for either two‐ or three‐street intersections: a traffic light that tries to adapt to the amount of traffic (which results in self‐organizing traffic lights) and a system of synchronized traffic lights with coordinated rigid periods (sometimes called the “green‐wave” method). We observe a tradeoff between system capacity and topological complexity. The green‐wave method is unable to cope with the complexity of a higher‐capacity scenario, while the self‐organizing method is scalable, adapting to the complexity of a scenario and exploiting its maximum capacity. Additionally, in this article, we propose a benchmark, independent of methods and models, to measure the performance of a traffic‐light controller comparing it against a theoretical optimum. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Self assembly of block copolymers has gained considerable attention because of its potential use in various areas such as medical and biomedical applications, nanotechnology, and electronics. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of amphiphilic block‐random copolymers with a covalently incorporated pH‐sensitive dye, namely eosin. Ring opening metathesis polymerization was chosen for the preparation of well defined block copolymers and block‐random copolymers using a modified “2nd Generation Grubbs” initiator. The self assembly behavior of the block‐random copolymers in solution was studied by dynamic light scattering and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). The influence of dye incorporation on the result of the self assembly process in methanol and ethanol was investigated and a subtle interplay of the nature of the selective solvent, the chain‐length of the block copolymer and the position of the dye within the polymer chain was established. Structural investigations using SAXS revealed a spherical shape and a core‐shell structure of exemplary block and block‐random copolymer micelles. UV–vis absorption and photoluminescence measurements revealed similar optical properties for polymer micelles in methanol compared to polymer solutions in THF.
