Segregation in a solution of rigid copolymeric molecules with two different sequences leading to co‐existence of two smectic mesophases has been studied. Thermodynamic characteristics of these mesophases and their equilibrium compositions were found in the frame of two discrete models. It was shown that the degree of ordering in the mesophase depends on the sequence of units in the identical molecules forming this mesophase. The concentration of “mismatched” molecules in the mesophase (the purity of mesophase) is determined both by the composition and the sequence of such molecules. It was shown, that a difference in the sequences can be sufficient to cause phase separation.

Nanoparticles formed from amphiphilic block copolymers can be used as drug delivery vehicles for hydrophilic therapeutics. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐peptide copolymers were investigated for their self‐assembling properties and as consequent potential delivery systems. Mono‐ and dihydroxy PEGs were functionalized with a pentavaline sequence bearing Fmoc end groups. The molecular weight of the PEG component was varied to evaluate copolymer size and block number. These di‐ and tri‐block copolymers readily self‐assemble in aqueous solution with critical aggregation concentrations (CACs) of 0.46–16.29 μM. At concentrations above the CAC, copolymer solutions form spherical assemblies. Dynamic light scattering studies indicate these aggregates have a broad size distribution, with average diameters between 33 and 127 nm. The copolymers are comprised β‐conformations that are stable up to 80 °C, as observed by circular dichroism. This peptide secondary structure is retained in solutions up to 50% MeOH as well. The triblock copolymers proved to be the most stable, with copolymers synthesized from 10 kDa PEG having the most stable particles. Loading of carboxyfluorescein at 2–5 mol % shows that these copolymers have the potential to encapsulate hydrophilic drugs for delivery applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been functionalized with poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate)s (PBLGs) having well‐defined polymer molecular weight (Mn = 7.5–21.1 kg·mol?1) and molecular weight distribution (PDI = 1.05–1.20) by a graft‐to method. Toluene solutions containing 5 wt % free PBLG and variable amounts of PBLG‐functionalized SWCNTs (PBLG‐SWCNTs) form gels at room temperature. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis reveals that the gelation occurs thermoreversibly, in accord with previous studies on the pristine PBLG/toluene gels. The heat of gel melting (ΔHm) is slightly elevated for the composite gels compared with the pristine gel, which suggests enhanced interactions between PBLGs in the former. But the gelation temperatures of the composites are unaffected by the presence of PBLG‐SWCNTs. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) analysis of the composite and pristine gels at different temperatures by the Guinier method suggests that PBLG‐SWCNTs promote interactions between PBLG rods, as indicated by the larger PBLG bundle size with increasing PBLG‐SWCNT content in the gel and the melt state. W/SAXS analysis of the dry gels reveals that PBLG‐SWCNTs induce significant changes in the PBLG packing order, resulting in a nematic phase, in contrast to a weakly ordered smectic C phase containing tilted PBLG rods that is observed in the pristine gel. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined hybrid block copolymers PMACyPOSS‐b‐PMMA and PMAiBuPOSS‐b‐PMMA exhibiting high POSS weight contents have been synthesized by RAFT polymerization and further studied as modifiers for epoxy thermosets based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The hybrid block copolymers self‐assembled within the epoxy precursors into micelles possessing an inorganic core and a PMMA corona. Thanks to the presence of the PMMA blocks that remain miscible until the end of the reaction, curing of the resulting blends afforded nanostructured hybrid organic/inorganic networks with well‐dispersed inorganic‐rich nanodomains with diameters on the order of 20 nm. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to demonstrate the important smectic power of the ionic functions present in mesogenic molecules, a series of N-alkylpyridinium bromides ω-substituted with (4-cyanobiphenylyl)oxy or [4-(2-methyl-1-butoxy)biphenylyl]oxy mesogenic group and their analogous 4-vinylpyridinium polymers were synthesized and characterized. The liquid crystalline behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Smectic mesophases, namely A, B, and E, were identified for the low molecular weight compounds, whereas smectic A and E mesophases were identified for the analogous polymers. Both structures were found to be very similar. They consist of single layers of upright molecules laterally arranged head-to-tail; the polymer backbone is inserted in between the layers. The monolayer smectic ordering observed in spite of the presence of the interacting cyano and chiral groups demonstrates the prevailing effect of the electrical interactions upon the structural organization. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Models to mimic the transmission of information in financial markets are introduced. As an attempt to generate the demand process, we distinguish between dictatorship associations, where groups of agents rely on one of them to make decision, and democratic associations, where each agent takes part in the group decision. In the dictatorship model, agents segregate into two distinct populations, while the democratic model is driven towards a critical state where groups of agents of all sizes exist. Hence, both models display a level of organization, but only the democratic model is self-organized. We show that the dictatorship model generates less-volatile markets than the democratic model. 相似文献

In this paper we define a new class of weighted complex networks sharing several properties with fractal sets, and whose topology can be completely analytically characterized in terms of the involved parameters and of the fractal dimension. General networks with fractal or hierarchical structures can be set in the proposed framework that moreover could be used to provide some answers to the widespread emergence of fractal structures in nature. 相似文献

The enthalpic interaction functions introduced by us earlier were evaluated in some ternary aqueous solutions. They are determined
purely experimentally without resorting to any model system. From them, the pair interaction coefficients based on the virial
expansion were evaluated, which will serve for a future theoretical development based on the McMillan-Mayer theory of solution.
Secondly, our new methodology of using the mole fraction dependence of the enthalpic interaction function as a probe to elucidate
the effect of a third component on the molecular organization is introduced. The conclusions for selected third components
in ternary aqueous 1-propanol are reviewed.
